Louisiana Purchase
How America grew
In 1803, Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase for $23.2 million. France was going through a war so they needed money, and didn't necessarily need the territory. Thomas Jefferson was kind of in a dilemma because he was not sure if it was constitutional and he did not get Congress' approval. The territory was 828,000,000 square miles. It doubled the size of the US. It stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Lewis and Clark were the ones to explore the Louisiana Purchase. They found a lot of new animals and plants that scientists had not yet discovered.
