New Haven Tidbits
Posts from the Principal
Welcome November
I have to say that it is absolutely beautiful when the leaves turn. Fall is one of my favorite seasons because of the change and excitement of the holidays, but it is also a super busy time of the year as well. I am hoping that your busy lives grant you some time to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.
Educational Insight
Boone County Strategic Plan
On November 20th, Dr. Karen Cheser will be speaking at the the Tiger Dad breakfast about the district's strategic plan. I have attached the link for you to look at it as well. If you are able to attend we would love to have you.
New Haven Highlights
We will be linking the Kprep data analysis to our webpage after our SBDM council meeting this month ( 11/17/15) for you to review. It will summarize achievements of our whole school, and break it down specifically by GAP groups. These are the achievements that our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students made last year. We are very proud of our kids and staff. I have attached a list of KPREP definitions to clarify any questions you may have about acronyms used.
Parent / Teacher Conferences (Nov. 2nd / Nov. 5th = 4:00 to 7:00 by appointment)
I wish there was another name for this evening because really it's a collaboration of people who take a great interest in the development of a special child. We've come a long way from a "typical" parent / teacher conference.
Have you ever wondered how we prepare for these? Believe it or not, our teachers and leadership have been discussing and analyzing student progress for weeks now. We've shared resources on how to organize and prepare for our meetings with you. Some have sent out surveys, some have talked with the students, and all have talked with each other. We've looked at universal data (test scores, benchmarks, etc), classroom observations, student work, participation, behavior, social / emotional development, etc. You name it we've discussed it. All of that information has been prepared in a way to best share with each family. Tracking student progress and mastery of the grade level standards is time consuming, but imperative to make sure that we are growing our children to the fullest. As a team of educational professionals and parents, it's imperative that everyone is on the same page so that we can continue to encourage successes and make a plan to tackle obstacles. It has to be a team dynamic to make sure that our kids are getting the most that they can from the 6 hours that they are in school each day. Thank you from all of us, for being active partners!

Family Atmosphere
Family Hoedown- thank you to all that came out and learned how to folk dance and enjoyed the live band. It was a great evening and we all had fun!
Safety First- There is always room for improvement, and we will be the first to say it. As a school that continues to grow, we are having conversations of how to make the safest environment for our children, but still keep our family atmosphere. I have to say, its a struggle some days to keep that balance. There are many suggestions of what we need to do, and there are those that test us as well. Do we limit visitors? Do we require scheduled lunch visits? Do we.... There are many questions to consider, but ultimately all decisions are made on what is the best for the safety of the school as a whole.
We offer a ton of activities before and after school with many sponsors and coaches coming and going. The sponsors of the clubs are the individuals who are responsible for the volunteers and coaches. If you are coming to school before 4:00 you will need to sign in through the office, unless you have made arrangements to check-in with your club sponsor. For morning activities the doors will remain locked and the sponsors will wait at the designated time for the students, and for pm activities the doors will be locked at 4:00, so arrangements with the club sponsors is important.

In the spot light....
STLP & 5th grade Gratitude Night
STLP: Mrs. Dammeyer is leading a talented group of 5th grade students in the STLP club. (Student Technology and Leadership Program). These individuals will be jump starting our morning announcements and we have been able to upgrade how we are streaming. This group will be writing their own scripts, anchoring the news, and filming production. So excited to see this become completely kid ran! :)
5th grade Gratitude Night: Mrs. Mason, school counselor, has been focusing on gratitude and being thankful in the 5th grade guidance lessons. Students have been discussing what being grateful looks like and feels like for themselves and toward others. Mrs. Mason & Mrs. Estey (art teacher) have collaborated to grow this lesson into a visual art display. The students have been challenged to not only demonstrate gratitude, but to pay it forward. What an innovative event that this has grown into. I am beyond excited for this evening. On Monday, November 23rd (6:00 - 7:00) our 5th graders will have an ART GALLERY night in which they will display their gratitude for someone very special in a unique "Gallery" evening. Please come and join us!
