Struggle for Civil Rghts/Civil Disobeidence

  • Kansas entered the Union as a free state rejecting slavery. Kansas was seen as a land of freedom and opportunity.
  • African Americans later formed the NAACP (National Association for Advancement of Colored People). This also led to Plaintiffs or black people who enrolled their children in white only schools with government support.

The Cold War

  • Even though we fought against North and South Korea, the Cold War was tensions between the U.S and the Soviet Union.
  • Many Americans were afraid if Vietnam turned to Communism, much of Southeast Asia would follow. During the war, 58,000 Americans died. 753 were Kansans.

Nuclear Age

  • Many Americans were afraid of a nuclear attack from Japan. Because of this, many people were encouraged to build underground shelters. To do this, you need about $1,000 worth of materials.
  • Eventually the fear ended when the U.S. dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
  • The Space Race with the Soviet Union ended in 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men on the moon.


  • During the war, Ration Books were issued to every family. Even young children were taught how to retrieve and use Ration Cards. There were severe punishment for people who disobeyed Ration Card rules.
  • Washington School was Topeka's first African American schools.
  • The first Pizza Hut opened in Wichita. The people who started the company only budgeted for eight letters on their sign. Pizza Hut fir perfectly.
