Grades, Incomplete, and No Credit

We have just completed our First Quad, so student's grades are on their report cards and transcripts. These grades will be part of your student's grade point average, GPA.

We have a couple of new grade possibilities that parents and students should understand. If a student is missing a summative assessment (test, project, or essay), we are awarding a grade of incomplete, "I". The teacher has communicated with your student that they need to meet and set up a contract/plan on how to resolve the incomplete. The student and teacher will need to meet to make the plan/contract by December 15, 2020. The student must then resolve the incomplete by the end of the 2nd Quad. The teacher will send a copy of the incomplete contract to the student and parent/guardian. If an incomplete is not resolved it will be replaced by an F.

We also have a new grade of NC, "No Credit". The NC was for students who did not participate at all. We have a small number of students who were not able to access WiFi or participate in classes for a variety of reasons related to the pandemic. The grade NC does not affect a student's GPA. It indicates that a student registered for a course but did not participate or participated less than a third of the time. The student must retake the course in order to earn a grade and credit for the course. Students who received an NC will not be eligible to take Credit Recovery as they did not participate in the original course work.

On Track Status

At CHS we have been working to make sure all of our students are "On Track" to graduate on time and to be ready for success in their post-high school endeavors. We have three measures of "On Track" status.

The first is credits, at the end of their freshman year, students should have earned at least 6 credits to be "On Track" to graduate in four years. Sophomores should have at least 12 credits, and Juniors should have at least 18 credits.

The second measure is attendance. Students should have 90% or better attendance to be "On Track" with attendance. Your student is currently calculating their attendance percentage in their advisory class as part of their Eagle Report. "On Track" attendance is closely correlated with earning credits and earning a GPA of 3.0 and above.

The last measure is their Grade Point Average or GPA. There is a large body of research that shows that students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are more likely to persist and succeed in college, trades, and military careers. A 3.0 GPA is having an average grade of B's or better. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is one of the few predictors of college readiness during a student's freshman year. Our students will pursue all types of careers after high school. Currently, about 62% of our students enroll in college immediately after high school. The professional trades such as electrician or plumber have coursework at the Community College level in order to complete apprenticeships. The majority of our students will attend college and a GPA of 3.0 or higher predicts that they will be successful and persist in their coursework.

How can families support their high school student at home?

  • Help your child set up a home learning spot and daily routine.
  • Ask your student to share what they are learning.
  • Encourage your student to take responsibility for their learning.
  • Encourage your student to join the daily "Zoom calls."

Do families need to teach their students at home?

  • No. All of the instruction is provided by the teachers at Centennial High School.
  • Encourage your student to reach out to their teachers for additional support. Teachers have posted office hours where students can "drop-in" for extra help.

How can my student get the extra help they need?

  • Your student can email us at any time to ask a question.
  • Your child can listen and ask questions during our "Zoom Calls" daily live classes and during daily Applied Learning.
  • Your child will be submitting work to the teachers digitally. We will know which students need extra support and reach out to them.
  • We have tutoring available to all students during the "8th period."
  • Reach out to the counselors to get support.

Please be aware that your student may be on their Chromebook, but not engaged in Distance Learning. We will be monitoring Chromebook use with GoGuardian. We also encourage you to monitor their online activity.

Keeping Contact Information Up To Date

Please check that your contact information is up to date in ParentVue. We rely on having the correct mailing address, email address(es), and phone number(s) to communicate. We have many telephone numbers or email addresses in contact information that have been in place since your student started elementary school. These are not always correct anymore. We rely on these methods of contact even more than we did in the past. You are able to update contact information yourself within ParentVue.
