Making Problems SMALLER
We wanted to loop our families into the conversations so that you can try to use similar messaging with your children at home.
The focus of our discussion was about "Always Trying to Make Problems SMALLER".
We promoted two specific behaviors:
1) "Hands Off" Behavior
Our kids play hard! We have noticed that many kids engage in non-malicious "hands on" behavior during recess, which often results in bigger problems. During this portion of the discussion, we explained the importance of having "Hands Off" behavior during play- no rough-housing, pulling on kids' coats/arms, intentionally bumping into kids, etc.
We taught the students about ways to make the problem smaller if kids are putting their hands on us or not controlling their bodies:
1) Tell them to stop
2) Move away
3) Tell an adult
We're asking our Eagle families to reiterate the above problem-solving strategies with their children, as we work to decrease the amount of minor physical contact that we are seeing on the playground.
2) Be Nice and Don't Spread Unkind Words
For this portion of our discussion, we focused on the importance of being kind and inclusive of others during recess. We also acknowledged that sometimes we hear unkind things about people. We encouraged our Eagles to try to be brave and stick up for the person being talked about or talked to in a negative way. We also encouraged them to make sure the unkind words that they hear stop with them. They usually don't need to run up to the person being talked about to tell them what was said about them- as that will bring that person down. They also should never go and tell other people what they heard- as that will make the problem bigger.
We're so appreciative of our families for partnering with us to discuss the above strategies with their students as we continue to create a safe, happy, and playful environment here at Edison.
6th Grade Parent Night- Rescheduled for TUESDAY!
Richards Middle School would like to invite you and your child to Richards Middle School on the evening of Tuesday, March 7, at 6:00 p.m.
The purpose of this evening is to introduce you and your child to their future school, the programs offered, and the selective classes available for them. We will also provide our students with a tour of our building’s selective classrooms.
The program will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. Parents are to report to the RMS gym, where they will meet the administrators, counselors, and academic department heads. Students will gather in the cafeteria, where their tour will begin.
Our goal is to provide you and your child with a good understanding of our vision and mission at Richards Middle School.
It's March is Reading Month!
Additionally, we are hosting Young Author's Day on Monday, March 6- in which students attend an assembly to learn about story elements then work as a class or in small groups to write their own short stories. As a culmination of a day of writing, students will gather together at the end of the day to see some of their stories "acted out"!
Also, throughout the month, staff members are serving as guest readers in each others' classrooms. We will also be hosting a couple of authors visits, a Relax and Read event during school, and a spirit week at the end of the month!
We're looking forward to a wonderful month of reading and growing!
Spring Conferences- By Request Only
Our teachers are looking forward to meeting with some of you during our March Student-Led Conferences. Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 9th from 1:00-3:30 and from 4:30-7:30.
These conferences are by request only.
On Wednesday, March 1st- Classroom teachers sent home letters to parents to let you know whether a conference is needed for each student. If your child's teacher does not request a conference, you have a chance to request one by reaching out to the teacher directly. Specials teachers will be available during designated conference times should you have questions or concerns. Students are encouraged to attend these conferences with their parent/ guardian, but it is not required.
