The RSAA Weekly Parent/Community Update
Be Prepared
Spring is here... or not. Once again as an Ohioan we will experience the rolodex of weather patterns between last week and the week ahead. You almost always have to have a raincoat of some sort, a more insulated coat as well as the snow scraper stowed away somewhere where it is easily accessible over the next month and a half. Prepare for the elements. That phrase echoes through my mind as it was chiseled into my mind growing up. You always have to be ready for the next thing, even when many times you do not know what is the next thing. That did not matter, it was just "prepare for the elements".
Spring brings a great deal of movement to RSAA. Upcoming programs, state testing, as well as the need for our students to finish out the school year strong. Longer lasting days also are upon us that will see the opportunity for kids to spend more time outside at home and at school. Kids need that fresh air, and open space to burn off energy. As we prepare for the spring at school it is important that students are getting needed rest, eating well and hydrating as well as getting some good exercise. Some of those things we can do along with you at school but some of the pieces are going to be important to do at home as well.
Thank you for your partnership and we are looking forward to an active and engaging spring.

Social Media and School
It is not the role of the school to monitor your student's phones or social media apps, yet more and more, we are dealing with conflicts in the school due to interactions in these platforms (instagram, tik tok, snapchat to just name a few). Students are posting pictures of each other, making inappropriate comments and engaging in arguments in group chats. Students are watching clips on tik tok and think that it is ok to come into school and enact these clips in the building, many types resulting in the disruption of class, transitions to class as well as vandalism
and bullying in some instances. More and more predators are posing as teenagers, young adults on these platforms as well which is a growing issue. Many parents monitor their child's accounts and many do not. Please be active on staying on top of what your children are doing with their accounts. I am asking that any type of communication devices that go on the wrist stay home, that if you do allow your child to have a phone and send it to school, the phone needs to stay in the student's backpack or teachers have places designated in their room. If you do not like either of these options, keep the phone/smart watch at home. Phones are not permitted to be out during class, out in the bathrooms or in common areas in the building. We have an extra phone available in the front office for students to call home if needed. I understand the convenience/uses of the cell phone and smart watcher wholeheartedly. Phones have become more of a distraction for adults and young people than anything else at this time, and I heard firsthand last weekend from a neurologist at Akron Children's Hospital how much these phones are impacting young people psychologically and socially. Students will be disciplined for cell phones that are not kept in the appropriate place at school and/or if there are issues from social media that spill over and disrupt the school environment.
