March Counseling Update
As we move into March, please feel free to stop into a monthly lesson to see the learning happening around SEL through our School Counseling Lessons. I'll be looking for feedback in the coming months around what you'd like to see next year with our School Counseling Model.
School Counselor's March Newsletter; Spanish March Newsletter
Mindfulness strategies are tools we can use to calm our bodies, manage difficult situations, and train our brains and attention.
Article: Mindfulness for Parents
5 ways to be mindful throughout your day:
Listen to your child with full attention (focus on listening)
Accept your child (and yourself) without judgment in that moment.
Imagine your child’s feelings and match your response (pause before you react; gain understanding)
Show compassion for yourself and your child in that moment.

Optimist Swim Club - 3rd-5th Grade
Waukesha Sings!
On Saturday, April 6th, the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Hillcrest and at elementary schools throughout the School District of Waukesha have a one day singing opportunity at Waukesha West High School. From 12 p.m. to 5:30, students will be rehearsing music together. Parents DO NOT need to stay with their student all day. However, you will want to return at 5:30 p.m. to hear the terrific concert! Please see the flyer displayed around school and attached in this newsletter. The website is rebrand.ly/waukesha-sings for more information and how to register your child for this event. Deadline is Friday, March 1st. Students MUST register in order to participate. The event is free our charge. Also, students CAN participate in both the optimist swim meet and the choir event! Please see Mrs. Runingen or email her at lruninge@waukesha.k12.wi.us if you have any questions.
Afternoon Pick Up
We had reports of safety concerns in the parking lot during afternoon pick up. Your help in following our expectations makes sure ALL students leave safely.
Please remember:
1. Do not have your child go into the parking lot without being walked by an adult. If you do not want to leave your car, teach your child to wait at the Drop and Go sidewalk off of the playground. We do not want students entering the parking lot alone.
2. Only park in designated parking spots. If you are waiting for a stop in Drop and Go, please park in one of the designated spots in one of the two parking lots until a spot opens up. Do not fill up the no parking zones as this blocks pedestrian and school bus traffic.
We have over 300 students leaving our building at 3:40PM. It takes a few minutes to move all of those individuals and for all of the traffic to empty. Please give yourself plenty of time to make this transition safe for everyone.
Thank you for your help with this!

Safe Arrival - Available Now!
1) By far the easiest way to interact with the new system is by downloading the app on your phone and signing up for an account.
2) If you are not an app user and prefer to use your computer signup and login at https://go.schoolmessenger.com/
3) The phone option is still available by calling the attendance line at school. There will be a menu there to transfer your call into the new system. You may however, want to use the direct number 1-866-490-7371. By dialing direct from a phone that is registered with the district, the system should recognize the number you are calling from and be able to quickly identify your children and allow you to confirm their absence.
