Powdersville Middle School - Spring Newsletter 2021-2022

Principal's Corner

Todd Binnicker, Principal

Hello Parents,

It is hard to believe we are already into our last 9-weeks of school! Our students will be completing the spring assessment of MAP before Spring Break. We will use this data to make our final preparations for our state testing in May. Please see the "Testing and Conferences" article for testing information.

Last week our band students participated in the Concert Performance Assessment (CPA) event. I am proud to announce our students earned a “Superior With Distinction,” the highest score possible for CPA! Congratulations to Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Dyer's classes for being awarded the SC Garden Grant! Please see their article below.

Many of our students are participating in spring sports for our high school and we are looking forward to our theatre students performing in the upcoming musical "The Little Mermaid Jr." next week.

A final newsletter will be sent out toward the beginning of May to discuss our end-of-the-year procedures.

Finally, Spring Break is April 11-18, 2022. I wish you and your family a very safe and relaxing time away from school.

Report Cards - Quarter 3

Quarter 3 grades will be completed by the last week of March. Please access them through your Parent Portal account.

The Quack is Back

The Rotary Club of Reedy River Greenville will be hosting the 18th Annual Duck Derby on May 7, 2022 beginning at 10:30am. The Rotary Club of the Reedy River Greenville will once again partner with Publix for the grand prize of one year’s worth of groceries. A full list of other prizes may be found on the race website (https://www.duckrace.com/greenville).

The PVMS Student Council is helping to raise money for the Rotary Club by encouraging duck adoptions. Please consider “adopting” some ducks to support the community service projects of the Rotary Club. Please select the “Powdersville Middle School Team” so that our team will receive credit for the adoption. Adoptions may be made using the QR code above.

Teacher’s Appreciation Week is May 2 - 6, 2022. The PVMS Student Council is planning several treats for the teachers during that week. Please consider reaching out to your child’s teachers to let them know how much they are appreciated!

Elections for PVMS Student Council Officers will take place in May. More details will be provided soon for students who are interested in a leadership position on the student council.

Jr. Beta Club 2021-2022

Powdersville Middle's Jr. Beta Club is proud to welcome new members for the 2021-2022 school year. To be eligible for an invitation to Jr. Beta Club at Powdersville Middle School, a student must have served no days of suspension for behavioral issues and earned an 85 or higher in all classes (both academics and related arts) for Q1 and Q2. The rigorous, strict academic threshold is done for two reasons: two nine weeks' worth of data shows that a student is consistently achieving academic success at a high level, and it also allows students who mature over the summer break (in this case, summer of 2021) to have fresh academic data to put forth toward qualification rather than relying on a previous school year's success or lack thereof. Qualifying after Q3 and/or Q4 of a given year isn't an option; students who show improvement in their academics toward the end of a given school year should continue that trend into the next school year and receive an invitation then. We are proud of the high standards of Jr. Beta Club at Powdersville Middle and our five-year consecutive streak of being named a National Beta School of Merit. We look forward to our members completing many service projects throughout our community over the course of the next few months!

SC Gardening Grant

We are excited to announce that the MID Self-Contained class has been awarded the SC Garden Grant! This program teaches the basic horticulture skills needed to start and maintain a sustainable school garden and will give these students an opportunity to learn valuable, real-world skills that will also build their confidence.

Our short-term goals include getting the garden built and planted before summer begins. Then, we'd like to begin growing enough produce to share with our faculty and staff 2-3 times throughout next school year. Ultimately, we'd love to also develop a strong passion within the students to become intrinsically motivated to continue with this endeavor. After developing that passion and desire within our students, our long-term goals include growing the size and variety of produce to begin thinking about a weekend "Market" where our produce would be available to our surrounding community and all profits would go back to the garden and students! Maybe, within 2-3 years, we can also be a CERTIFIED SC GROWN produce option.

We are extremely excited about this opportunity, looking forward to getting our hands dirty, and hope that you'll join us on this journey! Be on the lookout for updates!

Gift Card Program

Powdersville Middle School offers the opportunity to purchase gift cards as a great way to earn credit for your child’s school field trips and to help Powdersville Middle reach its goals for school improvement! Every gift card you purchase gives you 100% of the purchase value in addition to a designated credit percentage (80% of profit) towards your child’s trip and a designated percentage (20% of profit) towards the school's improvement goals. This program has paid the entire field trip cost for many of our students and their parents in past years. Consistency is the key! Don’t buy gas without gift cards! Ingles and WalMart/Sam’s Club give discounts on gas if you buy with gift cards! Don’t buy groceries, eat out, or go to the movies without gift cards! Don’t buy birthday, wedding, or shower gifts without gift cards! Don’t do home improvements or purchase appliances without gift cards! Definitely don’t go shopping without gift cards! Encourage relatives, neighbors, and co-workers to order gift cards in your child’s name.

There are many gift cards available through our online ordering. To get started, go to www.scripzone.com. Our group ID is 864269PMS. It is best to use your child’s name when you register as a new user.

  • Order by Tuesday morning and get them Thursday afternoon. You may pick them up at the school or we can send them home with your child.

  • We are not able to accept postdated checks.

  • A record is kept of your child’s credit through our online software. A record of your credit may be requested through e-mail (pvmsgiftcards@gmail.com).

  • We are not able to exchange gift cards after they have been picked up or sent home by your child. Please check your written or online order carefully before submitting. If we make a mistake in filling your order, we will be glad to make the necessary correction. We keep order forms on file for verification.

  • Plan ahead for what you will need for holidays. Filling orders the week before holidays is very challenging and availability is not guaranteed. Order early to ensure that you get what you need!
