Dear Students,

This week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. A healthy body image is very important in middle school. Middle School is a great time to get to know all about your changing bodies. Being healthy can mean a lot to different people, but understanding nutrition and how that impacts of mind and body are very important as we move into being a young adult.

This week i'm going to put out challenges every day to have you think about some topics to stimulate your thoughts on some issues that may be impacting you.!

Hey Parents: Please share in these conversations with your students. Leading a healthy lifestyle begins at home. We want to encourage you to share in these conversations. A healthy body image is integral in raising today's youth.

The theme for this year's is "Come as You Are: Hindsight is 20/20". What small changes can you make at home that can impact your whole family?

I'm sending out some challenges this week for your students. Talk to them about the daily challenges and join them throughout the week.

Challenge for Monday: Get 8-9 hours of sleep tonight!

Did you know that you need at least 9 to 9.5 hours of sleep everyday! Today I challenge you to get to bed early and clock in those 9 hours! Your brain and body will love you for the extra sleep!

Did you know that not sleeping enough affects: Your mood, Your behavior, Your Cognitive Ability, and Your Academic performance!

Turn off your phones and go to SLEEP!

Challenge for Tuesday: How much water am I drinking?

Did you know that we are made of 60% water! For those of you that are athletes or are working towards becoming an athlete--you need water to help you keep hydrated.

I challenge you to drink at least 3 bottles of water today!

Why? Because drinking water lubricates your joints! It also delivers oxygen throughout the body. Drinking water boosts skin health and beauty. In other words, water makes you look More Beautiful and Handsome! The digestive system also depends on water. Additionally, it boots performance during exercise!

Even the pooches need a lot of water! So drink up Rippon Students!

Even your pooches have to drink water!

Ms. Hernandez drinks lots of water throughout the day!

  • Low fat yogurt with berries and cottage cheese (Ms. Hernandez loves cottage cheese)
  • Whole wheat English muffin with pizza sauce, veggies and mozzarella cheese
  • Baked chips instead of the regular ones (add some bean dip or any other dip your parents may have at home)

Challenge for Thursday: How is Technology shaping how I see myself?

What Instagram sites are you constantly looking at? Which Actors do you idolize? Which models do you follow on Instagram? Which "Influencers" are you following?

The things that you are constantly watching on the internet really influence how we see each one another.

Today I challenge you to stop looking at these "Influencers" and Love yourself completely. If there's something you want to change, then set a goal.

I heard this on the radio the other day:

"Did you know that butterflies can't see their own wings. We can and we love to see how Beautiful their wings are. Just like the butterflies we don't know how beautiful we are, but others can see that beauty inside of us"

How you feel about yourself matters. Today's challenge is to think about how social media shapes how you feel about yourself.

Message from Ms. Arensberg to Rippon Teachers: (Parents check out the links and infographics)

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Over one-half of teenage girls and one-third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors (i.e., skipping meals, excessive fasting, vomiting, taking laxatives, etc.). I encourage you to take a few minutes to look over the infographics in this email and keep this information in mind. Often times, eating disorders go far beyond just disordered eating patterns. Typically they occur as a result of, or in co-occurrence with: substance abuse, history of trauma, bullying/weight shaming, or another mental health condition. There are several resources for help and support out there, but just taking a few minutes to become familiar with this information can be beneficial in working with students. If you have concerns about a student, friend, family member, or even yourself this information is invaluable.

I've also attached the NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) helpline info.

NEDA's website is also an excellent resource for more information and education in regards to eating disorders:
