High School and Beyond Plan
MA Class of 2022 Update (May 2020)
The High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) has gone digital with portfolio instructions!
In February we had planned our Spring HSBP visits to begin in March, but as you may have noticed plans have changed. Although we will not be able to visit students in their English classes, students can still work on updating their HSBP portfolio. The HSBP Office has created and invited students to join the "HSBP Class of 2022" Google Classroom. Our top goal in creating the HSBP Google Classroom is to have an effective way to communicate HSBP information and directions with students.
Students, please log in to your Mukilteo School District Google Classroom account and join our class! Just in case students cannot find their invite, our HBSP Class of 2022 Google Classroom code is: u5mug5y.
In place of in person lessons we will create activities in our Google Classroom to guide students through an HSBP portfolio update; which students can complete at their own pace. The following activities have been added to the Google Classroom for students:
- Complete a Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR) reflection survey,
- Complete an Education and Career Interests survey, and
- Complete any missing assessments (these will only be assigned/shown to students that are missing assessments from their portfolio).
We recognize that students and parents are juggling many activities and class assignments during this time. If completing HSBP activities seems overwhelming, do not worry, students can take from now until August to get tasks done. We are hoping all students will accept our invitation to our Google Classroom as we will continue to use this as a resource in the future.
Please keep reading for insights into HSBP activities.
Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR)
Refers to three “flexible” credits (2.0 credits of World Language and the second 1.0 of Fine Art). If requested, students can choose to take other classes that better prepare them for the goals outlined their High School and Beyond Plan.
Personalized Pathway Requirements (PPR) are related courses that lead to a specific post high school career or educational outcome chosen by the student based on the student’s interests and High School and Beyond Plan, that may include Career and Technical Education, and are intended to provide a focus for the student’s learning. Students document their PPR in their WOIS portfolios during the HSBP office's Spring visit.
A short video explaining PPR credits and the required PPR reflection survey have been assigned in the HSBP Class of 2022 Google Classroom, students should log in to complete this task.
Career and Education Interests
Videos on career exploration and education/training decisions and the Career and Education Interests reflection survey have been assigned in the HSBP Class of 2022 Google Classroom, students should log in to complete this task.
House Bill 1599 (2019) expanded the ways in which Washington students can organize their preparation and show their readiness for a meaningful next step after high school. In combination with a robust career and college exploration and planning process (the HSBP) and quality instruction, completing a Graduation Pathway helps prepare students for what comes after high school. HB 1599 requires students to complete at least one Graduation Pathway, in alignment with their HSBP, to graduate. All Graduation Pathways are available for all students.
Graduation Pathway Options
One of many ways in which students can demonstrate readiness for a meaningful first step after high school, as established in HB 1599.This step must be documented in students' HSBP portfolio; students complete a survey to document their plans.
Beginning with the Class of 2020, students must meet at least one of these pathway options to graduate:
- ASVAB: Meet standard on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) by scoring at least the minimum established by the military for eligibility to serve in a branch of the armed services.*
- College Admissions Exams (SAT/ACT): Meet or exceed the graduation scores set by SBE in the math and ELA portions of the SAT or ACT.
- CTE Sequence: Complete a sequence of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses.*
- Dual Credit: Earn at least one high school credit in ELA and at least one high school credit in math in dual credit courses (Running Start, College in the High School, and/or Career and Technical Education dual credit courses).
- Dual Credit Exams: For both ELA and math, earn a 3 or higher on certain Advanced Placement (AP) exams, or pass the course with at least a C+.
- State Exams: Meet or exceed the graduation scores in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics or in WA-AIM (Washington Access to Instruction & Measurement).
- Transition Course: Pass a transition course in ELA and math (for example, a Bridge to College course) which allows a student to place directly into a credit-bearing college level course.
*Note: Students who pursue these pathways (ASVAB or CTE) do not need to meet English and math requirements separately. English and math content are embedded in both pathways—and a student who meets either the ASVAB standard or the CTE pathway requirements has met the graduation pathway requirement.
