Welcome to April!

Spring Ahead at VTHS!

VTHS welcomed back both the Blue and Gold teams of the Class of 2021 on Monday, March 22nd and it was wonderful to see so many smiling seniors' faces! Continuing with that positive trend, we will be inviting both our Blue and Gold teams of 9th, 10th and 11th graders to attend school together beginning on Monday, April 12th, the first day back from Spring Break. Thus, we will no longer be utilizing a Blue and Gold calendar.

If your child is an exclusively virtual student and would like to return to in-person instruction, please contact your child's assistant principal as soon as possible so we can update their information in Genesis.

All VTSD schools will be closed from Friday, April 2nd through Friday, April 9th for Spring Break. We wish all of you a restful vacation and want to remind you that all students are scheduled to return to school--either Virtual or In-Person-- on Monday, April 12th.

Please be sure your children join in our Spirit Week Activities, which have been developed by Mrs. Kristy Riegler and the VTHS Student Council:

Monday, April 12th - Blue/Gold Day

Tuesday, April 13th - Tie-Dye Day

Wednesday, April 14th - Hat Day

Thursday, April 15th - Jersey Day

Friday, April 16th - USA Day

As always, if you have questions and/or concerns about your child's educational experience, please reach out to your child's teacher first. The teacher is the best one to assist you with questions about specific classes, assignments, and assessments. We truly believe that when the home and school work collaboratively, students receive a quality education. Thank you for being our Partners in Education!

Sincerely,

Pauline F. Anderson, Ed. D., Principal; panderson@vtsd.com

Nicholas M. Demsak, Assistant Principal; ndemsak@vtsd.com

Jacquelyn M. Van Orden, Assistant Principal; jvanorden@vtsd.com

Boys Basketball Highlight following a Game with Sussex Tech

On March 1st, following a game against Sussex Tech, the Sussex Tech Program presented one of our basketball players with a check for $1400 to help defer some of the costs incurred by his family due to the recent loss of their home to a fire.

Some very important values were learned from this sincere act of kindness. Thank you, Sussex Tech, for such sportsmanlike behavior!

Students Solve Shield Problem at VTHS!

In another example of staff and students working together to keep everyone safe as we return to school, Mr. Dominic Demsak works with his CFM students to adjust the desk shields at Vernon Township High School. As the Construction Facilities Management teacher, he guided his class to problem-solve the footprint issue where the shields were too wide for most of the students' desks. With a little ingenuity and tweaks, the function of the shields has been significantly improved while the distraction of their previous failures has been eliminated.

Model UN Results

Vernon Township High School students represented the Republic of China on Monday and Tuesday at the St. Peter's High School Model United Nations conference.

Fifteen teams across New Jersey participated along with a team from Pakistan. Our Model UN students developed position papers, crafted proposed resolutions, debated and collaborated with other delegations on a host of topics including the legality of Israel's annexation of Palestinian land in the West Bank, accessibility and distribution of a Covid-19 vaccine, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on indigenous peoples, and the decrease in youth employment due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As an added bonus, our Model UN students also had the opportunity to meet and listen to AmbaGary Domingo, the Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand at the end of the conference.

Maverick Brendli, Vjosa Ukella, and Kennedy Troung received honorable mentions and Julia Crafton, a freshman, received 1st runner-up. Approximately 150 students participated in this two-day conference.

Many thanks to Guy DellaTorre and Kelsey Falkowski for all their hard work with these students!
