Looking Ahead to Second Semester!
Points to Ponder & Casually Prepare for...
RECHARGE and RECONNECT!!
The winter break is in arm's reach and Y O U couldn't be more deserving of your time away from the building. It is our hope that this time is used for Y O U to
RECHARGE and RECONNECT!
Quite a few of you like to know rules for engagement and next steps prior to the expected execution for personal planning and prioritizing. Therefore, we have outlined items that will need to be addressed when we return from the break.
Some may want to use the week of December 18 - 21 to get a head start.
Learning Architects and other county wide professional learning participants, please plan accordingly.
January Student Work is Due on Thursday, January 4th, 2017.
Remember, any subject's task may be utilized for student work. However, it must incorporate writing. When posting student work, be sure to have the following:
1. Task (What are we looking at?)
2. Rubric (1 rubric to show the success criteria)
3. Peer Feedback/ Self Reflection Slips
(Let's move our students beyond ' add more details', 'showed work', and 'good handwriting'.)
Majority of your students must be represented.
(4th/5th...a collection of 20 work samples is fine.)
Lesson Plans Are Due on Friday, January 5th, 2017.
Please note: All bulletin boards must be completed by no later than FRIDAY at 3:30 PM.
Bulletin Board Expectations
See the LPES 207-18 Writing Bulletin Board Schedule to see if you are assigned board 1 or 2.
- The creator of the previous board should remove all items from the board by 3:00 PM on the last day of their scheduled display time.
- The board should be neat and display our scholars' writing to their best advantage.
- The board should represent writing from your entire class.
- Each board must have a rubric and standard.
- Each students’ writing must have Teacher Commentary.
- Please view Quality Bulletin Board Examples (please note that each of these boards do not represent the quantity of writing expected to be displayed.) This is just to give an idea of how student writing might be displayed.
Calendar invites have been sent out to aid you in remembering when your class writing should be displayed on the Showcase Board.
Updating Our Classroom Library
It's time for a 2nd semester classroom library refresh. All classrooms were gifted with additional books and it is time for the books to be unpacked.
Remember, your assigned letter should be written on your grade level's colored dot. Dots should be placed in the inside corner of the back of the book.
All books should be standing up straight with the front cover facing library guests.
Update Our Standards Board for Unit 4 - Reading & Writing
Unit 4 Overview (What is the major work of the unit?)
Unit 4 I CAN Statement (KK-2nd) and Essential Question (3rd -5th)
Teaching Point for each session. Session 1 should be visible.
Update Small Group Instruction Area
Update Poster and Position Chart Near Small Group Area.
Who are we seeing in the Small Group?
What's the Teaching Point?
What's the Strategy?
Is your area ready to receive students with room for them to work?
Updating Our Writers' Gallery
Our Writers' Gallery should operate as its name, a gallery. The number of gallery entries should grow over the course of the year, meaning writing entries should stay in the sleeves for the entire year. We will send the writing up with the students to the next grade level.
What to Include in the Writer's Gallery:
1. Mid Unit On Demand (Pre Assessment) with the rubric stapled to the back.
2. End of the Unit Published Writing with teacher commentary.
3. End Unit On Demand (Post Assessment) with the rubric stapled to the back.
Please be sure that all new students are included in the Writer's Gallery.
Updating Our Book Baggies
Majority of the books in our book baggies should reflect the students' independent reading level.
***It may be helpful to book shop towards the end of the week for book baggies to be ready in January.***
Prepare Walls for Unit 4 Charts
Remember, charts should operate as WALL POWER, not wall paper or rugs.
1. Please retire any chart that displays a strategy that your class has outgrown.
2. Re-tape/ re-position charts in a manner that is conducive for student use.
3. Prepare Unit 4 Charts Needed for Instruction
Charts can be ...
Writing Exemplars,
Jot Exemplars,
Constructed Response Exemplars
Micropropressions
and/or Strategy Based Charts
Writing Exemplar Charts
Strategy Charts That Teach "How"
Writing Exemplar Charts
Refreshing Our Writing Folders
Writing Folders should be cleaned out at the end of each unit.
The work of any current unit should be made visible through the student drafts compiled in the Writing Folders, meaning that Mr. Payne, Mrs. Shepard, and Mrs. Ricks should know the current writing unit by looking in your students' writing folders.
Please refresh the student writing folders by cleaning out any old writing samples.
Be sure the folders are placed in an easily accessible area for table leaders to access.
*** Student tools can stay.***
Updating Our Word Walls
Remember, the word wall operates as a visual cue for student use of taught words to be used in their writing pieces/ or written responses. Be sure to add a picture for support, when applicable.
KK - 2nd Grade uses High Frequency Words
3rd - 5th Grade uses Academic Vocabulary
(other options to include would be common figurative language, prefixes, suffixes, root words)

Update/ Create Book Shopping Schedule
Students book shop each week first thing in the morning.
