MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL LAMBERT
Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
In a week in a half it will be Winter Break already! Please use some of the break time to help your child read books they like. Reading together with your child is one of the best ways to enjoy reading and here are some tips so you can have fun reading together:
- Let your child choose the book.
- Read right before bedtime or naptime when children are not quite so energetic.
- Tell a story from the pictures in the book.
- Ask your child to ask YOU questions about the story.
I hope you enjoy this family time and that everyone returns rested and ready to learn!
Theresa Lambert
We need to hear from you: LCAP survey
The District is beginning its annual process of updating the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). This input collected will guide the update of our District plan for the 2017-18 school year.
Parents: Please click here (http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3336580/MVWSD-Parent-2017) to give input through March 1 in a survey about the plans' goals. (Using a laptop/desktop computer or a tablet is recommended. Formatting may not be as readable on mobile devices). Students in grades 5-8 will also be taking the LCAP survey soon.
Please look for an upcoming meeting at your school to learn more about the LCAP process.

POLAR BEAR WALK, RIDE & ROLL
We had another successful community-building event at Mariano Castro last Tuesday. This program encourages kids to walk, bike, or car-pool to school. There was a drawing for a new bicycle and helmet, and a girl in second grade won this time!
There are two similar events planned this school year – one in March and one in May. Join in the fun to reduce traffic, help keep our school safer, and help keep the air cleaner.
A big thank you to City of Mountain View's VERBS and SafeMoves for making these events possible!

FROM THE DISTRICT
MVWSD is now a “safe haven” district
Committed to the health of its diverse community, the Board of Trustees approved on Feb. 2 a resolution discouraging any potential immigration enforcement activities around schools that could create a pervasive climate of fear, conflict and stress for all students.
Citing that all children in the U.S. are entitled to equal access to a public elementary and secondary education, regardless of their or their parents’ citizenship, or immigration status, the Board pledged to use its discretion authorized by law to ensure the security of all of its students.
Questions and worries about immigration affects all students; children who have a status as well as those whose family members, friends, or schoolmates do not, and students who are themselves undocumented.
Read the full text of the resolution here.
IMPORTANT ENROLLMENT INFORMATION
ALL currently enrolled K-7th grade students are required to complete an ONLINE Student Intent Survey through InfoSnap. In the survey you will notify us if your student is returning or leaving the district for the 2017-18 school year.
NEW THIS YEAR: If you have a Parent Portal account, you can easily log on to your child’s INFOSNAP record. You do not need a SNAPCODE. You just need your student’s birthdate. You will be able to access the form on Monday, February 13, 2017. You must complete the Student Intent Survey to reserve your spot for the 2017-18 school year by Friday, February 17, 2017.
If you do NOT have a Parent Portal account, the Snapcode will be emailed to parents on Monday, February 13, 2017. You must complete the Student Intent Survey to reserve your spot for the 2017-18 school year by Friday, February 17, 2017.
Parents, please make sure the school office has a working email on file for you. If you don’t have a computer or need help completing the forms, now is the time to start looking for someone who can help you. Please find the flyer attached for additional information and help nights.
