Mrs. Candler
I am pleased to be teaching your child this year at Jefferson Elementary. I’ve been a teacher for 26 years with 20 of them as a reading teacher in our district. I teach Reading Recovery/Title I, Kindergarten through 5th grade students who need extra help in reading and writing.
My husband Rick and I have been married for almost 32 years. We have three children, two grown daughters and one almost teenage son. We have three beautiful granddaughters that we love spending time with. We love to be outdoors, travel, and spend time with the kids. Our son is a Boy Scout so we spend a lot of time camping and hiking.
You can contact me at ninette.candler@maps.k12.wi.us or 715-536-5432, ext. 12118. I look forward to hearing from you.

Recess Update
Some of the ideas included, pre-teaching games so that students have the same understandings of how to play the game. Last year this was a major source of arguments for students and we saw bullying actions erupt. (ie. we don't want that kid to play with us, so we make up a rule so he/she gets out/can't play). This means that the most common recess games were first taught/reviewed as a whole group before students played them. We have spent much time doing this the first weeks of school. So far we have taught how to use the playground equipment, basketball games, 4-square, dodgeball, baseball, 500, and others. Students are still encouraged to think of their own games, but to keep in mind the basics of including everyone to play and having agreed upon rules. In gym class, Mr. Ball is currently teaching the fundamentals of football as this was a source of many arguments and injuries last year.
After only a few days 95% of all activities were available for students to play because it was a major focus for the first few days. I am happy to report that recess conflicts have decreased dramatically since reviewing all game rules and overall recess expectations.
In addition to pre-teaching activity rules and expectations, we are also organizing safety patrols to come out and join in on games with students to be positive recess mentors. We have noticed that many students are unsure on how to effectively resolve a conflict. Our 5th grade safety patrols will be equipped to help students practice this skill. Also, we are actively reminding students to be encouraging of others when they get out in a game and have positive sportsmanship. The overall goal of this initial recess change is that we want students to have fun out at recess, know how to resolve conflicts, and stay safe. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Flu Clinic
The best way to stay healthy during the flu season is to get your annual flu shot. Everyone older than 6 months needs one. This school year, Lincoln County Health Department (LCHD) will be holding FREE vaccination clinics for all students in Lincoln County.
