Second Grade Learning Support News
Our Reading Class
This month in our learning support reading class we have been working on our reading fluency and comprehension strategies. Refreshing our word attack skills and our recognition of sight words and vowel diagraphs. Students are immersing themselves in fiction and nonfiction texts. Since we returned to school after the Eid break students have been receiving two books on a weekly basis on Sundays which they can use to read aloud at home with parents and caregivers to practice their fluency skills. The books can be returned for new titles on the following Sunday. Please let us know if you would like extra reading material.

Writing Unit One: Personal Narrative Writing
Our first narrative writing unit has been a great success. All students have enjoyed sharing stories from their lives about events and memorable times of importance to them. In our celebration students shared their writing with other second graders in different classes, it was a great opportunity to share our learning with other students. We have had titles as varied as The Roller Coaster Ride, The Best Summer Camp Ever, The Day I Met a Cobra, The Visit to the Chocolate Factory, The Best Birthday Ever and Visiting Ethiopia. Students have been strengthening their writing abilities by building greater stamina in writing and emulating writer's craft techniques as demonstrated in our writers workshop mini-lessons. At ASD we use the renowned methods of Lucy Calkins and her team at The Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College Columbia University to teach writing to our young students for more information see: readingandwritingproject.org/about. Writers Workshop is a structured program which seeks to bring out the best in young writers by exposing them to a variety of writing genres throughout the year, by giving them access to quality exemplars in the writing genre, and to "have a go" at emulating the style in their own writing. Our next writing unit which begins this week will be Writing About Reading. This unit will introduce students to the art of opinion writing and they will be engaged in writing book reviews.
