Digital Learning Day #1
March 16, 2020
Reading
This week we will read several stories about St. Patrick's Day. Here are your reading assignments:
1. Read St. Patrick's Day by Gail Gibbons. This is a nonfiction book.
2. Tell your adult helper what the main idea of the story is. Then give them three facts that support your main idea. For example, if your child says the story is about St. Patrick's Day, they could give the following reasons: We wear green, it's on March 17th, and people celebrate with their family.
Writing
This week, we will be focusing on writing opinion stories. An opinion story follows the format below:
State your opinion
First....(Reason 1)
Next....(Reason 2)
Last....(Reason 3)
Restate your opinion
Here is an example:
I believe that sunny weather is the best type of weather. First, you can play outside all day. Next, you can eat popsicles in the sun. Last, you can cool off at the pool if you get too hot. Sunny days are my favorite!
Here is your assignment:
1. Write an opinion story about your favorite game.
2. Read your story to your adult helper. Don't forget finger spaces between words and periods!
Math
This week we are learning addition strategies. We will learn a new strategy to use each day. Use the anchor chart below to help guide your child. Today we will focus on the strategy of using manipulatives. Manipulatives can be anything from counters to toys to Cheerios--basically anything you can touch and count. I teach the kids to group them together, so to model 2 + 3, make group of 2, then make a group of 3, then touch and count them all together.
1. Watch this video on addition.
2. Then use any manipulative you have at home (Cheerios, toy cars, rocks, beans, coins, etc.) to solve the following problems:
- 5 + 6 =
- 7 + 3 =
- 2 + 6 =
- 4 + 5 =
- 8 + 1 =
- 6 + 0 =
3. Write your answers on a piece of paper!
Social Studies
We have been learning about community helpers in Social Studies.
Here is your assignment:
1. Draw a picture of a community helper that you would like to be when you grow up. Be sure to include the tools that they use. For example, a doctor uses a stethoscope.
2. Write a few sentences explaining why you want to be that community helper.
