PTA Reflections Program

Is your child the type of student who loves to be creative? You can him or her celebrate arts in our school community by participating in this year’s Reflections Program, whose theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Students all over the country will reflect on this theme and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

Stone Ranch’s Reflections entries will be collected from September 24 - October 22, 2015. If you have questions, please go to: http://www.pta.org/reflections or http://www.stoneranchpta.org/id9.html or contact Tan Li, PTA Reflections Chairman at 858-395-4382 or Tango_li@yahoo.com.

What is Room G3 learning?

Reading/Writing- We are working on our last Daily Literacy activity: Listen to Reading. Our stamina for Read to Self, Read with a Friend, Work on Writing and Word Work have all reached about 15 minutes. The students are much better at being independent workers and are really showing that they understand our classroom procedures. This has helped me as I finish up our reading assessments. We will begin choosing Daily 5 activities next week and I am planning to start my reading groups by Monday, October 5.

Social Studies- We will be learning about maps and globes beginning this week. We have a big project that we will be starting next week that will help us understand where we are in the world.

Math- We have started practicing Math Daily 3. We are still trying to practice Math By Myself (individual math games) so others around us can concentrate on their math as well. We have also been practicing Math with Someone so that we can play a game with a partner while using a smaller voice so we aren't distracting others around us.

We have been working on two math skills in class:

  • Subitizing- the ability to quickly identify the number of items in a small set without counting. Parents can help by playing dominoes, dice games or cards with your child so your child can get better at "seeing" the number.
  • Counting on- knowing that when I add 5 + 8, I should start with saying 8 and then count only 5 more on. I am proud to say that most students in our class can do this. If you notice your child is still counting all, it is okay but show them how much faster it is to count on rather than counting all.

DON'T FORGET! FAMILY MATH NIGHT IS WED. 9/30/15 from 6-7. Hope you can come and have fun with math with your family!
