NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 2 Week 2 - 7 May 2020
Heavenly Father
We thank you for our mothers.
As they have always protected us,
we ask you to draw them close to you
and keep them safe always.
Dear Parents and Staff
This weekend we celebrate Mothers’ Day under the most surreal circumstances that we are likely to ever experience. This, however, is definitely not a cop out for children and dads to think it is any less special an occasion than other years and mums should rightly expect to be pampered and spoilt by their family. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to visit my mum as she lives in a nursing home but I will certainly be speaking with her to let her know just how special she is. I hope all mums have a wonderful day on Sunday and that dads and kids are very creative in how special they make them feel.
RETURN TO SCHOOL
As of today 63% of our students have returned to school. Whilst this is a significant number, the 37% who have not returned at this stage represent around 180 children. We fully respect the right of choice of all parents and, until we are directed otherwise, we will continue to support all children wherever they may be located to ensure a high quality of learning for all.
MERIT AWARDS
Tomorrow morning, we will have our first Merit Award “Assembly” for this Term. This will be conducted electronically throughout the school. Whilst parents won’t be able to join the presentation, we will record the session and, hopefully, if technology is kind to us, have it available for parents to view via a link on our school website. Children who have been working well, whether at home or at school, will be receiving Awards and we will arrange for those at home to receive these as soon as possible.
DADS’ AND KIDS’ CAMPOUT
There was much disappointment last Term when we had to cancel the Dads’ and Kids’ Campout. All is not lost, though, as I’m putting out the challenge for staff and families to hold their own campout on a night over the weekend of 15 and 16 May. All you need to do is set up your tent in the yard, or a room for those not prepared to brave the cool air, and post comments and photos to our school Facebook page (Notre Dame Facebook). Mums can join in if they like but may prefer to have the evening to themselves bingeing on their favourite series or movies. So, come on dads, step up to the challenge and let’s not let the coronavirus steal this away from us!
FR QUYNH
Due to the current regulations regarding visitors to our school, Fr Quynh will not be able to visit classes for the time being. Bro. Stephen will be visiting classes in a Pastoral capacity to check in with the children’s wellbeing at the times when Fr Quynh was due to visit.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!
Do not drop children in Daly St or any of the surrounding streets in the morning as it is a very dangerous practice. The drop off in the Parish carpark works very efficiently and is always supervised by staff. Please only use the gates near the school office for those children who are walking to school or from parked cars.
SCHOOL BAGS
Something that I have noticed when on duty at the school gate is that many of the children’s school bags require adjustment. It is important that the straps on the bags are tightened so that the bag fits snugly on your child’s back as prolonged carrying of the poorly adjusted bag may lead to back injury.
TUITION FEES
Tuition statements will be sent to families in the next few days. Whilst it is important that we receive payment of these so that we can meet our ongoing financial commitments, I am very aware that family circumstances may have been affected by the current situation. If you are experiencing hardship which affects your ability to pay school fees please make an appointment through the school office to meet with me so that appropriate arrangements may be made. It is important for parents to know that their child’s enrolment at Notre Dame Catholic Primary School will not be affected by an inability to pay fees.

YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS
On a Friday afternoon, over the last few weeks, we have had ‘Curious Time’ where we have created and built. This time gives us the opportunity to try out new ideas and new ways of thinking and problem solving. It builds our brains, enhances our understanding of math and science and supports healthy social and emotional learning.
One week we had to see how high we could build a Lego tower. Take a look at some photos below where children working at home used their own lego.
'The Most Magnificent Thing'
Last Friday we watched ‘The Most Magnificent Thing’. We had to then create and build our own magnificent thing. We could choose any materials to build with.
We created ‘Turbo’. Turbo is a machine that flies super fast. It can do tricks in the air like loop-the-loop.
Gabriel, Loki and Maxson
We created a castle. It is different from other castles because we made it.
Indiana, Zoe and Lilia
I made an explosion bomb. When you put it in the ground it explodes the whole school.
Liam
I started making a water bottle but it wouldn’t work. I decided to turn it into a raft.
Leola
We wish our wonderful Mums a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday.
