THE LAST BIRON TO GRADUATE FROM THE HILL (written by Miranda Sgariglia)
On Sunday, June 5, 2022, the last Biron will graduate from Shepherd Hill Regional High School. The patriarchy of this family is the great Leo Biron, also known as Coach Biron, also known as Chico, also known as the “founding father of Shepherd Hill football”.
Coach Biron or what we like to call him, Grandpa, was the head coach of the Rams for 18 seasons, starting in 1973. He had a record of 100-73-4, three league titles, and had the only undefeated football season in Shepherd Hill history. He was also a key coach for the Defense in their Super Bowl win in 2007. Our grandpa was a great coach but he was an even greater grandpa. Chico’s four children and seven out of 12 grandchildren have passed through the halls of Shepherd Hill, one earning the title of Doctor, six being DI and DII college athletics, and three continuing in his footsteps by attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, one being Alyse Biron, the 2022 graduate. We can’t thank our grandfather enough for instilling his wisdom, patience, and pride into our family.
Shepherd Hill has felt like home to us over the past 50 years. We all grew up on that field on the Hill where the air is always a bit colder and the wind a little quicker. Whether we were playing as athletes on that field or running to meet our grandfather in the endzone after a game, the memories we created are endless and priceless. Shepherd Hill has played a huge part in our family history. It’s the end of an era for us, for now. Who knows what the future holds for the future generation of Birons maybe they’ll find themselves in Maroon and Gold one day.
