Updates from Mr. Dettwiller
2-12-2024
As we see the hundred days of school parties in the lower grades, we thought it was important to look back at some of the big events for the year and all the outstanding things our Eastern students have done this first half of the year. We are so proud of our kids and everything they do both in the classroom and beyond. Our mission is to help our students find their "E": Enrolled in higher Education, Enlisted to serve their country, or Employed. We were so proud that last year at graduation every student that walked across the stage had a plan for their "E". We feel our students getting involved in activities outside of the school day is so important for them to be successful after graduation.
If you are a student and want to get involved or a parent who wants to know what options are available, please reach out to your school office and check our website often. We will do all we can to help you get involved and find the skills to help you find your "E".

Tuesday February 13th between the JV and Varsity boys basketball game at home versus Alexander the Eastern Athletic Department will recognize its latest inductee to the Eastern Local Athletic Hall of Fame Mr. Dennis Eichinger as well as long time announcer Mr. Randy Wachter.
Dennis Eichinger was a class of 1972 Eastern High School graduate from Chester. Dennis was a member of the undefeated football team in the Fall of 1971 going 9-0. His sophomore year, the Eastern Varsity Boys Basketball team won league titles in both the MOVC and the SVAC. His senior year, the basketball team went 19-3, won the sectional championship, and advanced to districts. He still holds the Eastern boys basketball player all-time high scoring record of 1,486 points scored before the 3 point shot was officially recognized by OHSAA. He was a four sport letterman upon graduating high school and was an exemplary student athlete. Upon graduating high school, Dennis attended Marietta College and lettered his freshman year in basketball.
Upon transferring to the Ohio State University, Dennis earned his degree in education and returned to Meigs County to pursue a career in teaching and coaching. Mr. Eichinger served the students and community of Eastern Local School District as an educator from 1977 until the end of the 1992 school year. During his tenure at Eastern High School, Mr. Eichinger taught health, physical education, and driver education. During his teaching career, Mr. Eichinger also passionately served as a Jr. High Football Coach, Jr. High Basketball Coach, JV Football Coach, JV Basketball Coach, Assistant Varsity Football Coach, Varsity Basketball Coach, Varsity Baseball Coach, and Varsity Track Coach throughout his years here.
Mr. Eichinger also served as the Jr./Sr. High School Athletic Director from 1982 until 1986. When first becoming athletic director, the Eastern High School Athletic Fund had a little over One-Hundred Dollars in it. By the time his tenure as AD had finished, the Athletic fund had nearly $40,000 in its budget. His hard work and sharp fiscal mind led to a massive gain for Eastern student athletes. Upon leaving Eastern High School, Mr. Eichinger served as an assistant principal and principal of Meigs High School, Tech Coordinator at Washington State, and Principal of Belpre High School.
Mr. Eichinger also served on the Eastern Local School District School Board of Education from 2010 until 2014. Mr. Eichinger is most proud of the wonderful relationships his career has brought him over the years and loves to see many of his former students and players serving our community as teachers and coaches. He is not a man you’ll find saying look at my accomplishments, or I did this or that, but is a true passionate community member who always gave everything his all.

THE EASTERN FAMILY WILL MISS SOME RECENT RETIREES

Board member Floyd Ridenour celebrated his last board meeting after more than a decade of serving on the board. Celebrating with him in her last board meeting was treasurer Lisa Ritchie who has served as treasurer for Eastern Local for over 27 years. Another staple that didn't get to attend the meeting, but will be missed is Custodian Patricia Barber who recently retired after serving the district for over 24 years.
This group will be sorely missed and we can't thank them enough, but we are excited for them to get to enjoy their next chapter.
Thank you to Toyota Buffalo representatives for speaking to Eastern Junior and Senior students about the Kanawha Valley FAME Program AMT opportunity where selected applicants can earn an associates degree that is likely free while earning solid wages and gaining core skills leading to permanent gainful local employment. A DAY TO CELEBRATE
The Eastern Football team recently held their end of the year banquet to celebrate the amazing year they had. Individual player awards were given out and the team ate like kings thanks to the families that supplied the food. It was a great day to recognize these athletes and coaches who made their school and community proud.
Later that day, the Band and Choir had their Christmas concert. It was an outstanding performance, and got everyone in the Christmas spirit. This group as a whole has made incredible strides and keeps impressing and growing.
Thank you to both groups of students, coaches, directors, and the families and community members that came out to support these kids.
It was a great day to be an Eagle.
Career Fair
After completing an action research project through The Ohio State University Student Leadership Research Collaborative, Eastern students were able to see the fruits of their labors come to life with their first annual Career Fair. It was incredible to see something student-lead, planned, and executed come to life. Students 7-12 were able to converse with many different individuals in different career paths. We would like to thank all of the career vendors that participated today. Additionally, we want to thank our students for their engagement and participation. Helping our students to start dreaming of their future is a top priority. It's another great day to be an Eagle!

DARE WITH DEPUTY BARNHART
The sophomore Health classes recently welcomed Deputy Barnhart into their classroom to discuss and educate them on drugs and alcohol. The students were asked to take a stand on the opioid epidemic and develop a presentation on how to improve the community through prevention, legislation, law enforcement or treatment. The students did an excellent job working within their groups to develop an action plan for a healthier community.
Staff participating in December Calendar Fun!

Eastern Football
The 2023 Eastern Eagles: Most games in a season (14), Most wins in school history (12-2) record. Ranked #1 in Region 27 (first time in school history). TVC Champions first time in 24 years. Regional Runner Up (first time in school history) Most points in school history (534) Most total yards in school history (5,134). Defense forced 49 turnovers (28 fumbles, 21 interceptions) Defense scored 54 points (7 scoop score, 2 pick 6). Every single player was able to letter this year. 2 of our senior leaders had amazing numbers!
Rylee Barrett has been selected as Student Athlete of the Week by WTAP sports. See the story below.
MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio. (WTAP) - Rylee Barrett is a senior football player for the Eastern Eagles. He knows what it means to be a student athlete and understands the importance of excelling not just on the field, but also in the classroom.
“My definition of a student athlete would be a student that participates in sports,” said Barrett. “We’re taught, especially in football, that a student comes first and that being a student and getting your work done in education is most important because that’s why you’re in school.”
Rylee has faced many challenges with balancing school work and football as he is mainly taking college classes. During his difficult journey as a student athlete, he has gotten help from his coaches and teachers.
Rylee plays running back and linebacker for Eastern and has been a key piece in the Eagles’ postseason run. After defeating River in the regional semifinals, Eastern is set to face Caldwell in the final. Rylee is thrilled his team is getting a rare opportunity in the playoffs.
“A lot of excitement not only from me, but from our community,” Barrett said. “As a football team we’ve never gotten this far so we’re in uncharted waters. Nobody’s really experienced this from Eastern or Meigs County in general. So there’s a lot of excitement.”
The goal for the Eagles is to win a state championship in Canton, but Rylee also has goals for himself before season’s end.
“I set a goal at the start of the year. Last year, I had 1,000 rushing yards at the end of the regular season and going into the playoffs,” says Barrett. “So this year, my goal before I was to end my career as a senior to have 1,500 and I’m on pace for this. That’s about what I’ve been working towards.”
Rylee doesn’t know where he wants to go to school yet, but he wants to study physical therapy.

Eastern High School honored Veterans at their Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, November 10th. The assembly was led by Eastern Principal, Garrett Hall, and students from the EHS National Honor Society. There were many Veterans in attendance. The keynote speaker for the event was Eastern’s Resource Officer and Veteran, Joseph Barnhart. Officer Barnhart talked about the importance of honoring Veterans in our country and the sacrifices these men and women make to keep the next generations safe and free. He also encouraged students to take some time and thank a Veteran for their service. Emma Edwards, National Honor Society President, talked about the importance of the POW/MIA table that is represented in restaurants during this time. At the conclusion of the assembly, students shook hands and thanked the Veterans who were in attendance. We want to say thank you to all the Veterans who attended our assembly and to all Veterans in the USA.
TREATS ON THE TRAIL
On Friday, October 27th, the students at Eastern Elementary participated in Treats on the Trail. This is an annual event where parents and community members set up a spot on the playground track and pass out candy to each individual student in grades pre-k through 6th grade. Students are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and enjoy the fun.
FROM READING CLASS TO THE BREAKFAST TABLE
For the past three years, Ms. Beegle's reading classes have learned about raising chicks. After the lesson, students helped take care of the chicks - feeding, watering, cleaning the pen, checking for illness. Last year, one student enjoyed the lesson so much that he and his dad built their own chicken coop so he could 'adopt' a few of our class chicks. Yesterday, he had the joy of gathering his first egg!
OHSAA Leadership Conference
We are so proud of our Eastern Students, Addi Well and Danielle Epple, for being the only keynote student speakers at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Leadership Conference this Tuesday at Athens High School. They spoke to over 130 high school students about their participation in the AHA! Mental Health Summit from spring of 2023 and how they have developed their leadership skills and public speaking confidence. We were able to take roughly 20 of our finest student-athletes to hear from several high level and motivational speakers about the importance of leadership in sport and life. I'm extremely proud of our Eagles for representing our school and community with pride.
Go Eagles!
TEDDY BEAR CLINIC
The Eastern Care Clinic hosted the Pre-School Eagles and their Teddy Bears on Tuesday. The students helped their bears learn about how the clinic can keep them healthy and make them feel better when they’re unwell. The Eastern Care Clinic staff provided a variety of learning stations to educate the students about the importance of physical, mental, and oral health. With the help of the physical health team including Damia Hayman, CNP, Cassie Smith, LPN, and Charity Barthelmas, CMA, the students assisted in taking vital signs, caring for boo boo’s, and giving their teddy bears a flu shot. Kelli Radford, MSW, LSW and Kim Johnson, BSW, QMHS worked with the students and their bears to understand how our moods affect our behavior. The students and their bears also met with Amy Satterfield, RDH to learn about the importance of oral health. The students were able to check their teddy bear’s teeth, brush and floss, and take a ride in a dental chair. The Teddy Bear Clinic was a great opportunity for the students to meet the clinic staff, become familiar with the clinic environment, and take away any fears they may have about seeing a health care provider. The students had a great time, and all their teddy bears were given a clean bill of health.
*Special thanks to Mr. Dettwiller, Kim Betzing, Dawn Hall and the Pre-School staff for allowing the students to participate.

Eastern students learned about leadership, advocacy, and research
Eastern students learned about leadership, advocacy, and research in their first session at The Ohio State University Student Leadership Research Collaborative. This year our year two students will be working with the Ohio School Boards Association while our year one students work to tackle another problem-solution complex to better our school and community.
Our kids are really working to take ownership of their school by developing a strong leadership voice.
Today they learned six things about leadership:
Leadership is imagination
You must be authentic
Strength is key
Learn to teach
Value the people you're around
Leadership is appreciation
Our year two students met Dr. Kathy McFarland, the CEO and executive director of the Ohio School Board Association while our year two students learned about the YPAR process and problem solving.
It's a great day to be an Eagle.
EASTERN JR./SR. HIGH STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
This month, Danielle Epple, and Addison Well were selected as the Eastern Jr./Sr. High School students of the month. Addi and Danielle will be speakers at the OHSAA Southeastern Student Leadership Conference at Athens High School on October 24th. The Youth Leadership Collaborative as a group have been working hard with our Career Coach as well to plan a Career Fair here at Eastern High School to bring local available career opportunities for Eastern students upon graduation.

This program is designed by The Ohio Fire Marshall for grades PRE-K through 3rd with fun and engaging one-on-one presentations. Also, the children receive a gift bag containing a fire hat and fun information to take home and go over with their parents.
The Local Fire Departments are working with the Red Cross and hope to provide fire alarms for homes in the area that need them.
The Fire Marshal wants us to know this prevention is evidence and data driven educational material.
Thank you again to these great community partners.
2023 HOMECOMING QUEEN
Congratulations to Hope Reed for being crowned our 2023 Homecoming Queen!
EASTERN JR./SR. HIGH STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Eastern Jr./Sr. High School’s student of the month for September is Sidney Dillon. Sidney was nominated with overwhelming support from staff for being an excellent example of Eagle Pride (Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Dependable, and Encouraging). Sidney goes out of her way to help her peers, including helping the new underclassmen around the building with the new transition. Ms. Will’s wrote, “Sidney’s kindness is of the highest quality and she is willing to go out of her way to help anyone in need.”
Congratulations Sidney!
Some of the most meaningful experiences come when we step outside of the classroom.
Today, Mrs. Williams' College Composition students took to nature to hone in their sensory and descriptive writing skills. They put their toes in the grass, on the rocks, and in the water to fine tune sensory language.
They will be using this skill as they continue to develop their literacy narrative throughout the writing process.
I think it's safe to say that they enjoyed themselves.
EASTERN FFA ATTENDS NATIONAL CONVENTION
The Eastern FFA Chapter had the privilege to join over 70,000 FFA members from across the country while attending the 96th National FFA Convention. FFA members were able to explore the FFA Expo where students could check out career opportunities, college pathways and socialize with other FFA members from each state and attend the opening session of the convention. FFA is a great way to make new friends and discover new things about the agriculture industry you might have not known. While on this trip, students were able to go to the zoo and take an educational tour and learn about the animals. We were also able to attend the World's Toughest Rodeo put on by Cinch, which is one of the biggest sponsors of the FFA. Overall, the four students who were able to attend had a great time and experienced one of the greatest traditions in FFA history. We would like to thank all of our sponsors and everyone who made it possible for us to attend the 96th National FFA Convention. We would mostly like to thank Mr. Hall and Mr. Dettwiller for allowing us to attend these events.
