Tiger Time News

News from the O.C. Taylor Principal, Lisa Pedevilla

November 16-20, 2020

Dear O.C. Taylor Families,

Students Out Sick: If you are keeping your child home because they are not feeling well OR someone in your house is not feeling well, please make sure to let Nurse Katy know by phone call or email. If you are emailing teachers, include Nurse Katy, elissa.faught@gcisd.net and Ms.Betty betty.jones@gcisd.net

Annual Turkey Drive: We are very pleased to bring back our popular frozen turkey drive! Our Dads' Club will once again be collecting frozen turkeys to provide our O.C. Taylor cafeteria and custodial heroes with turkeys for Thanksgiving and then donate the rest to G.R.A.C.E. for local families to also have a wonderfully delicious holiday. Last year we smashed our record by collecting 222 turkeys and we want to try and bless even more families in 2020!

Bring your FROZEN TURKEYS to regular school drop off on Thursday, November 19th (remote families can bring their turkeys between 8 and 9 AM that morning) for a contactless drive-through donation. We are so THANKFUL for our Tiger family and for this opportunity to support local families during the holidays!

Holiday Fun at OCT: We invite your child to participate in some holiday fun! Not only despite the current circumstances but because of the current pandemic, we want to build fun into the holiday season. We plan to spread joy and build excitement with our annual grade level Reindeer Games and dress-up days. All of these are optional. (See details below).

We wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with blessings.

To the BEST of days,

Principal Pedevilla

Updates from the Clinic, Nurse Katy

Students out sick: If you are keeping your child home because they are not feeling well, or someone in your house is not feeling well, please make sure to let me know by phone call or email. If you are emailing teachers, include myself elissa.faught@gcisd.net and Ms.Betty betty.jones@gcisd.net

Parents of 5th graders: The Growth and Development program is presented to all 5th graders on each campus as part of the district approved health curriculum. I will be presenting the program to 5th graders at OCT on Friday November 20th. Notification letters were sent home with your student. Feel free to call or email me with any questions you have.

COVID-19 Email Communication Update

As we move into November, GCISD will be making a slight adjustment to the process in which families are notified of a test-confirmed positive COVID-19 case on their campus. Beginning this week, families will receive one email notification identifying all positive cases for that day on their student’s campus, as opposed to multiple emails if there are multiple cases. Families will only receive this email if there was a positive case on your student’s campus that day.

NOTE: This does not change procedures for close contact communication. If your child is determined to be a close contact of a test-confirmed positive case, you will be directly notified by your campus.

Health Screening for Students

All of our in-person learners' parents must pre-screen their student for signs and symptoms associated with COVID-19 before bringing your student to school. The signs and symptoms are to screen for are:

  • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Loss of taste or smell

  • Cough

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fatigue

  • Headache

  • Chills

  • Sore throat

  • Congestion or runny nose

  • Shaking or exaggerated shivering

  • Significant muscle pain or ache

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea or vomiting

If your child demonstrates any of the above signs or symptoms, they must stay home, and you need to report to the campus nurse the signs or symptoms your child is exhibiting. In the event that your child has a fever, they must be kept home from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Please do not give fever-reducing medication and send your child to school. Additionally, please do not send your child to school if they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, or are test-confirmed with COVID-19.

Book Fair Updates

There will not be a physical Book Fair this year. Our Book Fair will be completely online. Any items you purchase will be shipped directly to your home.

The fair started on November 6th and ends on November 19th. We already have Tigers stocking up on books! Many of you have asked how you can donate books to your child’s classroom. Scholastic does not have a way to do this online, but recommended that you email the teacher and ask what books they would like to add to their classroom libraries. Thank you for your generosity! Every dollar you spend at the fair benefits our school programs.

Check it out HERE!

GCISD Reads!

Our Tigers read SO MUCH that some of them completed the GCISD Reads Challenge over the summer! If your child has completed one of the challenges please encourage them to continue to grow as readers by participating in another one.

Information about the GCISD Reads Challenge can be found HERE.

Tech Tired?

Are you looking for ways to balance the technology in your child’s life? Pressed for time? Check out this resource from Common Sense Media! You can receive quick text message tips to help balance the tech in your life.

Updates from the Counselor, Mrs. Whisman

Hello Tiger Families! Beginning in November, our Character Focus from PurposeFull People is Gratitude. This is a great time of the year for all of us to focus on all that is good in our lives instead of getting lost in all that is hard and confusing. Every day my morning messages will be talking about Gratitude.

Has the pandemic created anxiety in your child? Are you noticing more anxiety in your children and those around you? Join us for an informative evening with a discussion on Anxiety in Children and How to Help.

The event will be recorded and posted here.

If you would like more information about our monthly topic or for ways to get in contact with me, please click here for my newsletter.

Changing Instructional Model

Changing Instructional Model

As a reminder, parents are able to switch from in-person to remote learning at any point during the school year. In order to make this change, please contact the campus counselor.

For families that are wishing to change from remote to in-person learning, that may only be done at the end of a grading period. The process for changing to in-person learning requires parents to log in to Skyward Family Access and complete the changing instructional models form prior to the end of the nine-week grading period. Instructions on where to find the form and how to complete it can be found here.

Below is a schedule of when the form will become available, when the form must be received by the campus, and when the change will go into effect:

To change after the second nine weeks, parents must complete the form between November 16 and December 4. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on January 6.

To change after the third nine weeks, parents must complete the form between February 14 and February 26. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on March 22.

If you have any questions regarding the timing of when parents may change the instructional model selected, or the associated process, please contact the campus counselor at stacy.whisman@gcisd.net.

A NOTE from Mrs. Vencill....

As we begin the month of November, I hope you all know how thankful I am for my Tiger families. Thank you for your love and support and for sharing your children with me. My heart is full because of my talented, musical Tigers.

  • All students: Unfortunately, we will not have our annual Veterans Day program this year, but students will learn our national anthem, state song and school song as we discuss the importance of Veterans Day. I would like to have a VIRTUAL Wall of Honor this year. If you have a picture of a veteran you would like to add to our Wall of Honor, scan it and send it to me via email at bethany.vencill@gcisd.net.
  • All students will also continue composing, reading and performing rhythm patterns and connecting these patterns to Veterans Day and Thanksgiving lyrics. Students will also use basic music symbols in their compositions including time signature, barlines, double barlines, and repeat signs.
  • Veterans Day - Many thanks to those families who added pictures to our virtual Wall of Honor! You can view our Veterans Day slideshow here.
