Hawthorne Happenings
January 2022
Happy New Year!
We hope our Hawthorne families were able to have a restful and happy Winter Break! We are excited to welcome back our Bulldogs and start another great semester of learning!
As a reminder, our students will be going outside for recess for a full 30 minute recess when the wind chill and/or temperature are above freezing. Students will be going outside for at least a fifteen minute recess when the wind chill and/or temperature is above 20 degrees. That being said, please make sure students are coming to school with coats, gloves and hats. If you are in need of assistance with those winter items, please call the school. We would be happy to help you with those resources!
Valentine's Day Party Information
Valentine’s Day parties will be held on Friday, February 11th. We will have a dance party, games, snacks and crafts.. Due to health and safety protocols, we will not be able to host parent volunteers.
To make this party successful, PTO is asking for your help donating supplies and/or money. To donate supplies, please see the PTO Amazon Wish List. Supplies need to be sent to school (either shipped by Amazon or sent with your student) no later than Friday, January 28th. PTO will help to fulfill any items that were not purchased. Please note, these are the ONLY approved items for the Valentine’s Day Party this year.
If the Amazon list is empty, it means all items have been purchased, so please consider donating instead using the PTO PayPal link. Any donations not used for the Valentine Day parties will be put towards Teacher Appreciation Week and Field Day activities.
Hawthorne's mailing address is 1815 S Jefferson St, Kearney, MO 64060.
Thank you for helping to make the Valentine’s Day parties a fun and memorable event for our kids!

Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST)
Hawthorne teachers and staff have been learning over the past year how to best support our students who may struggle at times with behaviors by utilizing the BIST model. The purpose of the BIST model is to partner with students when they are struggling and help them be accountable for their actions to make changes in their life.
BIST is designed to teach and protect students through GRACE and ACCOUNTABILITY so that students can demonstrate three important life skills listed below and make good choices.
Grace is unconditional acceptance of students, but not negative behavior.
Accountability is allowing students to accept responsibility for themselves and their actions.
Life Skills
I can make good choices even if I am mad or have an overwhelming feeling.
I can be okay even if others are not okay.
I can do something even if it's hard or I don't want to.
