Halloween Party

Thank you in advance to the parents who signed up to contribute goodies for Tuesday's party. In 4th grade, the kids don't wear costumes. We just relax and enjoy the snacks!

Book Fair

Just a reminder that the class will be visiting the sale on Thursday of the upcoming week. That is the same evening that the sale will remain open until 6:30pm for families who might want to visit.

Math

Mrs. Close's Class ~ We completed the first section of Module 3. The area and perimeter work this week definitely exposed multiplication/division fact weaknesses. Fact practice at home would be great! The area/perimeter quiz that the kids took yesterday will come home in next week's Friday Folder.

ELA

Writing ~ We started the 1st PAWS two weeks ago! Each assignment really takes a week. We just distracted by the longhouse building! We'll finish that process up during the upcoming week so the kids are a little bit familiar with the steps before they tackle the 1st real assignment. In a nut shell, the task will be opinion based. Each student needs to plan, and draft their piece. Then an adult needs to edit. I always have a mix of students who edit with me at some point in the week and who have their parents edit at home. After the editing process, kids then write a final copy. All pieces (the plan, rough draft that has been edited, and the final copy) are turned in to me on Fridays. Many kids choose to work on google! In fact, about half the class has drafted the piece we are working on now in google docs!

Reading ~ All four book groups will finish their novels before Veterans Day. Book groups are so much fun! This week our focus has been on summarizing. They have realized that it's a tab bit easier to summarize a whole book than it is to narrow in on a few paragraphs. Theme is our next big topic to cover before we end the first unit.

Social Studies ~ Our next SS/ELA integrated unit will be Explorers!

Picture Book Friday ~ This is when a student becomes the guest reader for the day! The expectation is that the child will take a picture book out of the library or use one they already have, practice reading it throughout the week, and then entertain the whole group on Friday. On Monday, I'll ask for a volunteer to go first!

Band & Orchestra

Good news! Mrs. Perry and Mr. Ieda would like to begin rehearsing earlier than usual. The groups will meet every day 1 from 2:30-3:00. So, the first rehearsal will be on Thursday, November 9th. So, that week, the kids will need to bring their instruments on Tuesday for lessons and Thursday for rehearsal. I will give weekly reminders!

Science

The crayfish will arrive Monday for the second part of our Structures of Life unit!
