LITERACY

This week we considered the question: "What are the risks in helping others?". Our stories this week were Literary Nonfiction, and focused on the risks taken by those who were standing up for the rights of others during the Civil War. We practiced the reading strategy of Sequencing, used our Inferring skills to figure out unknown words and meanings, and reviewed Irregular Plural Nouns. We've been having substantial issues with Pearson Realize, so we took our Week 2 test with paper and pencil. :)

This week we reviewed components of an "Informal" or "Friendly" letter, and students were asked to write a letter to a friend or family member about a time they or someone they know acted bravely. We also tried our hand at making a Picsay after finding an unknown word in our reading material, selecting a picture to represent it, and writing the definition, part of speech, and number of syllables.

There are a wide range of technology skills in our classroom, and this has provided an opportunity for some of the tech savvy students to help others navigate through some of the apps. Most students should be familiar with Picsay, Google Drive, and Padlet from last year, so it is my hope that we'll be able to do more with technology once we're in the routine of using these programs.

Our "Reading Status" process is going well! Please check in with your child to see if they are on track to finish their Independent Reading Book by Monday, November 10. Thanks for your support!

MATH

This week was spent reviewing Unit 3's content and our test was yesterday, 10/30. Overall, the class did well! We will begin Unit 4 next week, which focuses on Division.

I have added a Math sub-page on the Parent Page of Haiku. This includes numerous links to math practice sites as well as vocabulary practice various math terms.

SCIENCE

This week we conducted a lab on Sunlight and Shadows, learned about some of the weather instruments included on Space Probes, and the students have been working in groups to sketch a space probe designed to orbit around or land on their assigned planet. Some of the probes are very creative! Each student will sketch a final version of a space probe and present their design concept to the class. I look forward to seeing these next week!

FINALLY........

A big THANK YOU to all the parents who were able to come in and help out with our Fall Party! The students really seemed to enjoy themselves. I've attached a few pictures below.

Have a fantastic weekend, and stay warm!
