Happenings at NCC
LE/CSI New Police Vehicle
We purchased a new car for our Law Enforcement/CSI through a partnership with Lake Waukomis. We are excited for this to be used as an important training tool for students!
NCC Holiday Meal
Thank you to Culinary Arts for preparing NCC's holiday meals for students and staff in addition to to-go meals for public purchase. We also thank those who generously donated to our non-perishable food/toiletry collection drive. We collected more than 2,100 goods and $260 for United Services Community Action Agency! Thank you to the Diesel program for loading them up and delivering them for us!
NTHS
Congratulations to the new National Technical Honor Society Members! There are about 55 new members this year. Mrs. Henke said she is very excited to work with all members and develop new ideas for community service projects this year. NTHS continued the tradition of Adopt a Family for the holidays and NCC students and staff showed up big this year! Students and staff from each program collected items and funds for a large family in an effort to make their holidays extra special. They collected 90% of the family's wishlist items in addition to donating a $500 giftcard.
FFA Drive-Thru Winter Wonderland
NCC's FFA program hosted a drive-thru Winter Wonderland Dec. 12 and invited families from across the Northland. The entire annex, most of the annex parking lot, part of the driveway and the greenhouse were all decorated for visitors with lights, holiday inflatables, Santa and a reindeer. Congratulations to Ms. Barnett and the FFA student members for a great event!

Program Spotlight: Health Sciences
Our Program - Health Sciences
Northland Career Center offers a one or two-year program for students wanting to explore the health industry.
The Health Sciences program focuses on building students' knowledge and skills as a nurse as well as focusing on other areas of healthcare. Health Science students earn First Aid & CPR certifications and can earn CNA certification their first year. Students also have an option to return their second year to experience project-based learning and work-based learning (Internships).
Our Instructor - Mr. David Brown & Mrs. Lee Bledsoe
Mr. David Brown, MS-CTE, BSN, RN, was an instructor for the Practical Nursing program at NCC from 2013-2017. This is his third year teaching Health Sciences. He has 30 years of nursing experience. Before working at NCC, he worked as a CNA instructor and spent many years before that in acute care.
Mrs. Lee Bledsoe, MS-CTE, BSN, RN, joined the NCC staff in August 2016 as a PN instructor. This is also her third year teaching Health Sciences. Prior to NCC Mrs. Bledsoe worked in a variety of healthcare positions including in the hospital, home health, and long-term care, but her passion has always been teaching.
Our Alum - Ms. Nina Mustafic
Ms. Nina Mustafic graduated from NCC's Health Sciences program in May 2020 as a CNA and is now putting her certification to use as she navigates a pandemic and majoring in Nursing at Metropolitan Community College. The Park Hill High School alumna found employment as a CNA at North Kansas City Hospital and is responsible for checking patient vitals, making sure patients' needs are being met, charting her patients and doing hourly rounds on them. Mustafic said that NCC confirmed her intentions on a nursing career and gave her the confidence to be successful in her job and school.
"NCC has helped me establish a confidence I didn’t have before -- that if I put faith in myself I can accomplish great things even through the most stressful times of life," Mustafic said.
Two years ago Mustafic applied to NCC's Health Sciences program because she was considering nursing as a career. She said she had no idea the decision to apply would be life-changing.
"NCC interested me because I was having a hard time in school and life in general," Mustafic said. "I always contemplated becoming a nurse so I thought, 'what do I have to lose?' and it was by far the best decision I have made in my entire life. I always say, 'the day I found out I got accepted into NCC was the day I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.'"
One of her favorite memories at NCC, Mustafic said, was attending a healthcare expo where she was able to share about NCC's Health Sciences program with a younger generation and meet future employers and schools.
"That’s another reason why I was so thankful for NCC," Mustafic said. "It was more than just going to class, it was about building your career, showing you all the options in healthcare, meeting new people, and establishing yourself in said career."
Mustafic said that she would recommend NCC to others because it's an opportunity to decide whether a career is for you while in high school, hone a skill, and learn by hands-on experiences.
"NCC has changed my life in the best way possible," she said. "It’s a great program where you get to create a real life skill that you can apply directly outside of high school."

Program Spotlight: Teaching Professions
Our Program - Teaching Professions
Northland Career Center offers a program for students wanting to explore the teaching industry.
Teaching Professions students work in established local preschool classrooms, elementary, and middle schools to help gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in their chosen field. This program provides students with the coursework and internship hours to earn a Child Development Associate Credential or Youth Development Credential Certificate.
Our Instructor - Mrs. Ashley Dice
Mrs. Ashley Dice came to NCC in 2016 after spending the previous two years teaching second grade at Amazonia Elementary School for the Savannah R-III School District. Prior to that position, she worked as a paraprofessional for the Platte County R-III School District.
Mrs. Dice earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Missouri Western State University and additionally holds a certificate in Early Childhood Education. She earned a Master of Science in Educational Leadership (K-12) from Northwest Missouri State University and her Education Specialist degree in Superintendency. Mrs. Dice is married with two children.
Our Alum - Ms. Zeshaun Cheatam
Ms. Zeshaun Cheatam graduated from Northland Career Center's Teaching Professions program in 2020. Now the Liberty North High School alumna is continuing her teaching pathway at Northwest Missouri State University studying Elementary Education.
"NCC has benefited me in many ways after graduation," Cheatam said. "I am now more informed about anything to do with children or classrooms in general."
Cheatam said that she knew NCC would benefit her from the start.
"I’ve always had an interest in children, but I never really understood the full steps, attention, dedication, passion, and professionalism it took to become an early learners educator," Cheatam said. "I am now more informed about anything to do with children or classrooms in general," she said. "NCC has also given me a mentor that I could never give up and that’s Mrs. Dice."
Cheatam said she had many good memories of NCC including receiving the perfect attendance awards, internship, conversations with Mrs. Dice, and participating in trunk or treat at her internship site with her Teaching Professionals class.
"I would recommend NCC to anyone because you can literally go there and find your way through your future," Cheatam said. "There is no way that you wouldn’t succeed through NCC just because of all the great and encouraging staff and your profession. You get to chose your journey through NCC but make sure you have fun while doing it."
