Down Syndrome Awareness Month - Super Hero Day TOMORROW!
In order to formally celebrate these incredible individuals, we'll be having a "Super Hero" day tomorrow, October 19! We are asking our students and staff members to participate by dressing as their favorite super hero, coming up with their own super hero identity, or wearing a shirt or other clothing items that represent super heroes.
You see, our students with Down Syndrome are some of OUR Super Heroes here at East Elementary! Along with that extra chromosome come a number of super powers and we are excited to celebrate some of the many ways our kiddos are differently-abled.
Your support and participation in this special event is voluntary, of course, but we do hope you'll help us make this day a special one for our Super Heroes!
Partnering with Parents
Our teachers prepared lots of fun activities that families could use at home to practice math skills. Additionally, those in attendance got some assistance downloading useful apps and logging in to school programs that can also be used on personal devices. Our food services department prepared a delicious meal of street tacos and sides, too! All in all, my hope is that the evening was an opportunity for us to foster stronger relationships with the families we are blessed to serve each day.
As I've mentioned before, strong partnerships with our Pirate Parents are key to your child's success! As a staff family, we want our Pirates to know that our campus is their home. Events like our first math night are just one more way in which we can open our doors for students, siblings, and other stakeholders to see learning stretch beyond the typical school day.
Please know that you are always welcome at East! As we move forward in the school year, plans are in the works for additional family events "after hours." Ideally, our hope is to host one event per month. When it works for your schedule, we do hope you'll join us! Each time, we will focus on a different content area or a have a different goal in mind. Here are just a few opportunities in the months ahead to join us for an evening of fun with your family:
November 8 - Fall Family Festival (Benefitting Watch DOGS)
November 27 - Family Game Night
December 11 - East Elementary Elf Extravaganza (Focusing on a season of giving!)
October 25 - Nifty Fiftieth Day of School!
This day will also be full of special events for our Pirates as we conduct a second engaging educational event! Our entire campus will participate in a variety hands-on lessons, rotating between a number of classrooms throughout the day. Student, parent, and teacher feedback from our "Rock Your School" event was fantastic, so we are ready to put on another fun day of learning!
Red Ribbon Week - Oct. 29-Nov. 2
As part of our participation in the campaign, we'll have a series of dress-up days for our students to participate in. Please remember that students are never required to participate but are encouraged to do so, as your family best sees fit.
The special dress-up days for Red Ribbon Week are as follows:
Monday, October 29
"I am drug free from my head to my toes!"
Crazy Hair & Sock Day
**A pair of crazy socks will be provided for each East Elementary student!**
Tuesday, October 30
"Stay strong against drugs!"
Wear camouflage!
Wednesday, October 31
"Say 'BOO' to drugs!"
Dress as your favorite book character!
(Don't forget - we'll have a campus-wide costume parade beginning at 8:05!)
Thursday, November 1
"Your choices are the key to your dreams!"
Pajama Day
Friday, November 2
"Team up against drugs!"
Wear your favorite sports jersey or t-shirt!
We hope your child will have fun participating in these dress-up days, but even more so, we hope that they'll also come away from the week knowing that "drug free" is the way to be!
Halloween Costumes & Festivities
We do ask that children refrain from wearing scary costumes. No toy weapons or similar props will be allowed in school. Additionally, any fake "blood" or other scary face paint will be removed. With such itty bitty Pirates on our campus, we want to be mindful of their emotions and protect them from anything that might make them fearful.
All students will participate in a costume parade, which will begin at 8:05. Parents are encouraged to stay after drop-off and join us the gymnasium, where our East Pirates will have a chance to show their creative costumes! We'll begin with PK and move through the grade levels one after the other.
Halloween Party Times
Halloween parties for all grade levels will be held on October 31. We like to stagger the start times of our parties by grade level to allow parents to spend time with each of their children. Additionally, this helps in reducing congestion in our front office. We hope you'll be able to join us for some spooky fun! Party start times for all grade levels are listed below:
PK - 1:15 PM
Kindergarten - 1:30 PM
First Grade - 2:30 PM
Second Grade - 1:45 PM*
Third Grade - 1:00 PM
Fourth Grade - 2:15 PM
Fifth Grade - 2:00
Parents may sign their students out following the party, if you choose to do so.
*Second grade is a "nut aware" grade level; please refrain from sending any peanut or tree nut products. We appreciate your help in keeping our Pirates safe!*
