Wrightstown Ravens' News
October 21, 2021
This morning on the WES walking path behind the building, a coyote was spotted by neighbors, parents, and staff at approximately 9:40 am. Recess and P.E. classes were temporarily moved indoors. After speaking with the Pennsylvania Game Commission the school was informed that recess could resume outdoors. The Newtown Township Police Department was also alerted.
I would like to thank Mrs. Kilfeather for setting up the fall display in the front of the building! These decorations are a festive addition to our school! I would also like to extend my appreciation to Mrs. Borger who has the Running Club up and thriving! The students enjoy this activity so much!
We are all committed to the safety of all the students in Council Rock and Wrightstown Elementary. We continually work with local police to learn and implement best practices in school safety and security. Council Rock has adopted a set of federally endorsed protocols for an intruder on campus situation, known as ALICE. The acronym stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. All Council Rock staff and administrators have been trained in the ALICE protocols. One difference between our past "traditional lockdown" and "enhanced lockdown" is our classroom doors will be barricaded. This will look different depending on the grade level and the age of the children.
We are conducting an Enhanced Lockdown Drill next Wednesday afternoon, October 27th. This enhanced lockdown drill will be no different than drills conducted in the past. Specifically, WES will use the all call intercom to signal the drill. All students will lockdown in their classrooms with their classroom teacher, and we will use the intercom to end the drill. Newtown Township Police and/or CRSD Security personnel may be on site.
It’s always a good idea to review this information with your children prior to the drill. The attached social story is a resource parents can use to help children understand how we are approaching our added safety measures. The social story helps put these procedures in "kid friendly" terms! And the teachers share and review it with students prior to the drill.

We hope to see you at the Trunk or Treat event this weekend!

CAFETERIA UPDATE
We recently had a new Point of Sale system installed in the cafeteria. Students need to punch in their ID numbers when getting a free lunch or when purchasing snack. It is important that students know their ID numbers so we can keep the lunch lines moving.

Reading at Wrightstown from Mrs. Etgen
Wrightstown students have already been working hard at reading this year! With the help of the Title One assistance, Mrs. Keen, and myself, we have had the pleasure of reading with each student at Wrightstown this year! This reading snapshot enables us to get a glimpse of each student’s strengths and weaknesses when it comes to reading. Please keep in mind that, as the literacy specialist in the building, I often read with many of the students, both in and out of the classroom. Sometimes I co-teach, and other times I work on special topics or projects. If your child is chosen to participate in the reading intervention program, you will be notified and given a permission note. Also, please know that your input is important and you are always a part of our teaching team! Although we see your child daily in the school, if you see struggles with reading activities at home, please reach out and let us know. If you have any questions or need book suggestions, feel free to check out the links on my website, or email me at petgen@crsd.org . Lastly, as always, take the time to read with your child and enjoy that special time together - no matter how old they are!

Please take a moment to read the following letter from Chartwells at this LINK. It includes information about what IS and IS NOT included in the free lunch program. Specifically, the letter states:
A student receiving a free meal must choose at least 3 items for the lunch to be considered complete as per the Department of Child Nutrition regulations, one of which must be at least a half-cup serving of a fruit or vegetable. Anything less than this will be considered an a la carte purchase and must be paid for by the student.
