A Note from Mr. Ciochina
Happy New Year to our entire Timothy Ball community. The faculty, staff, and I are extremely excited for a fantastic 2020. It is hard to believe that our school year has reached its halfway mark. Report Cards for the second grading period are scheduled to come home with students on Thursday, January 23.
With winter weather upon us, please remember to budget extra time for the car line in the morning and afternoon. Thank you for always driving carefully in our parking lots and driveways and looking out for the safety of all students.
I am proud of our students’ attendance rate for the first semester which is 96%. Social-Emotional News from Mrs. Holok
Happy New Year! Many of us are hoping to start the new year off in a positive way. However, it is easy to fall into old patterns of negative thinking. It’s important to understand why it is so important to work to get control of our negative thoughts.
Negativity affects our brains, especially the developing brains of children, in unhealthy ways. We all have an inner voice or private conversations with ourselves. Neuroscientists have discovered that these voices are generally more negative than positive. Children’s voices are particularly negative, and this usually stems from doubt, fear, and/or shame. Children here the word “no” on a regular basis, and many experience negativity in their daily interactions with others. Exposure to negativity can be compared to the effects of second hand smoke over a prolonged period of time. According to neuroscientists, it produces stress chemicals in the brain. In addition, when we speak our negative thoughts, additional stress chemicals are released. This changes the brain function of the child as well as those listening, causing anxiety and irritability. Over time, negativity causes emotional harm to relationships within families, in school, and in social situations. Further, environmental negativity, combined with a child’s negative inner voice, can lead to poor mental health. In contrast, positive thoughts and interactions affect our brains and relationships in healthy ways.
Parents, guardians and caregivers can help change the balance of negative and positive thoughts towards the positive. We can help our children to become positive thinkers by paying attention to the way we communicate with our children. Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson teaches overcoming negativity by using a 3:1 ratio of positive to negative thoughts. Basically, for every negative thought we have, we need 3 positive thoughts to replace it. Nurturing this type of balance in our own thoughts as well as the thoughts of our children encourages resilience, a skill necessary in life for overcoming obstacles.

Stomp Out Bullying Tip
Tell the bully that what they are doing is hurting you. Often times they do not realize when a joke has gone too far.
BIRTH TO SCHOOL
STUDENT COUNCIL SCHOOL STORE
The school store will be open in the cafeteria in the mornings before school on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 until the bell rings. Prices begin at 25 cents. We have pens, pencils, bookmarks, highlighters, pencil sharpeners, etc.
FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Our nurse is in need of boy and girl pants. Mostly sweats and comfy pants to help fit more students. Please put an extra pair of clothes in your child’s backpack/locker. The nurse has clothes but not always every size! Thank you!
Attention: If your child has a Dr. note restricting them from PE they must sit out from recess. They can sit on the bench with a book or game. This is to keep them safe from further injury. If you have any questions please contact our nurse, Mrs. Schurch.
Regarding Taking Medication at School - Remember that ALL medications must be accompanied by doctor & parent notes. Otherwise the medication cannot be given at school. All medication must be in its original container. All prescription medication must have the correct information on the label. Also, no cough drops, or essential oils are allowed at school unless accompanied by doctor & parent notes. No child should be bringing medication to school in order to self medicate.
