BCS Solar Eclipse Procedures - We are prepared to celebrate this historic event AND keep your boys and girls safe. Please read the procedures we have established below:
Brown County Schools
Eclipse Procedures
1. Brown County Schools has provided basic information via an email that included training regarding the eclipse for all staff members who will be supervising students during the time of the event. This included bus drivers who may have students on buses during the end of the eclipse time period and lay coaches who might be having athletic team practices during the eclipse period. Training emphasized approved glasses and not taking them off.
2. The school will provide basic information on the eclipse to all students/parents via the Solar Eclipse permission form. We will make an all-building announcement the morning of, at the time of the eclipse, and at the end of the day telling students that they should not look at the eclipse without special glasses.
3. For teachers who are planning a class activity that includes direct observation of the eclipse, parental permission and approved eclipse glasses is required. If students are bringing their own glasses, ideally teachers will look at them to be sure they are on the NASA list. Instructions on the use of the glasses will be part of the lesson plan.
4. We will refrain from “impromptu” activities, such as teachers deciding to take the students out to see the eclipse or even a bus driver stopping the bus to watch it with the students. These activities are not allowed.
5. We will not allow outside recess or classes, such as physical education, during the eclipse unless students have protective eyewear and parent permission. The same will apply to athletic team practices outside. Dismissal of students to buses or cars will be highly supervised so students are not stopping to stare at the eclipse.
6. Parents may ask for their students to be dismissed from school so they can see the eclipse. Parents may also choose to not send their student to school on the day of the eclipse. Students will be marked with an excused absence if the parent notifies the school that the absence is for this purpose.
7. If a teacher elects to participate in watching the eclipse with approved eyewear for students who want to participate, a permission slip will be issued and needs to be signed.
8. Alternate indoor activities will be provided for students who do not have suitable eyewear or did not return a permission slip.
9. Excellent resources regarding the eclipse are provided on this website: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/
