A MESSAGE FROM MISS Di NARDO
May is Mental Health Awareness Month!
Some thoughts from your school counselor…..
We have given you all sorts of tips and information for your own mental health well-being these past two years. But, what about those around you? How should you speak with them if they share thoughts and difficulties they are experiencing?
Hackensack Meridian Health offered this advice in a recent magazine -
5 Things You Should Never Say to Someone with Depression
- “It could be worse/other people have it worse.” This might make them feel guilty for feeling depressed, or like they shouldn’t open up any more. Instead: “I am so sorry this is happening.”
- “I know/understand how you feel. I was so depressed when [something trivial].” You don’t have to understand what the person is going through to be there for them. Instead:
- “I’m really sorry you are going through this. I’m here for you whenever you need me.”
- “Everything will be okay. Think happy thoughts.” Don’t try to overload the person with positivity. It’s better that you empathize with them, and let them know that their feelings matter to you. Instead: “You are important to me. Would you like to talk about your feelings?”
- “Have you tried meditating/yoga/journaling?” These practices may be helpful to some people, but they don’t work for everyone. Don’t give unsolicited advice if you are not a trained mental health professional. Instead: “What can I do to help you?”
- “Why aren’t you in therapy/on medication?” Seeking out professional help is a personal choice. A person may feel judged/shamed by such a question. Instead: “I’ve noticed that you seem very anxious/sad lately. I’m concerned about you.”
These suggestions will help you in effectively supporting the people in your lives who may be struggling with their mental health.
Be well,
Miss Di Nardo
OUR LOST AND FOUND IS OVERFLOWING!
Help!
As the weather gets warm, our students are taking off and leaving their jackets outside. PLEASE label all outerwear and lunch items with your child's name so we can promptly return missing belongings.
Current lost and found items will be displayed throughout the week. Remaining items will be donated as of Monday, May 9th.
Thanks for your help!
