Together in Education:Family Update
February 7-11
Lancaster Drive Public School and Parent Council

School Update
Dear Families,
Our sincere appreciation for the outpouring of support from our community in light of the tragedy that occurred this week. Moments like this connect us to what it means to be human and the importance of our connection to one another. Support Counsellors were on-site throughout the day on Tuesday to check-in with students and provide a place for students to talk, draw or take a break. When meeting with staff before school we were able to help frame classroom discussions with students in age-appropriate ways. We centered our dialogue on the understanding that each person's grief, sadness, and reaction is as unique as their own fingerprint and that all of our emotions are okay and what we need to feel in that moment.
Compassion and empathy help us to go places together in hurt and healing. It has been so touching to drive the neighborhood and see the lights and hearts in the windows of our community and across the city. As part of our healing process, students at Lancaster engaged in an opportunity to offer thoughts and support to the students at Mother Teresa. Our care packages are ready to be delivered to each buddy class at Mother Teresa on Monday. The notes were heartwarming and, we believe, helped students feel a sense of care and compassion - an expression of their amazing lion hearts.
As we work through the next period of time, administration from both schools will be meeting with school board representatives, City of Kingston representatives, and traffic commissioner to review policies and procedures, and ensure our practices are placing the highest priority on student safety. We will continue to work in partnership with our school councils and value their input as stakeholders in these processes.
School life continued this week and students engaged in the normal routines, learning activities, and enjoyable moments of being together. We look forward to being in the building again this week. Thank you Lancaster families for all that you do.
Lani Fox, Sara O'Hearn and your Lancaster Staff
