COMMUNITY UPDATE
GREETINGS COLLINS CUBS-
What a wonderful week together full of celebrations and learning fun at Collins this week. Thank you to ALL those families who helped make this a DECEMBER to REMEMBER for our staff and our students!! From the donated gift cards to the sweet treats, to cookies, gingerbread, and popcorn-our staff enjoyed your donations and had a BLAST this December! Thank you!
Students enjoyed a special gift of a 30-minute special movie with Mrs. Ciacchella in the gymnasium this week and we celebrated EXCELLENT P.A.W.S. behavior with an all-school assembly. A special thank you to our P.A.W.S. committee for planning and facilitating the beautiful assembly.
We look forward to a wonderful NEW YEAR together when we return on JANUARY 3rd. Wishing you and your families a lovely holiday break filled with rest and relaxation. We will see you in 2024!
DECEMBER REPORT CARDS:
Quarter 2 officially completes on December 21st. Please check PowerSchool for report cards and updates from teachers. Just a reminder, our teaching staff will be on vacation beginning Thursday, December 21st in the afternoon and will return with the students on January 3rd should you have any questions. Thank you!
RECESS REMINDERS:
As the break draws closer, please be sure to talk with the students about recess expectations of wearing jackets, hats, gloves, etc. As we have Michigan weather with warm spells and cold spells, our goal is to get the students outside whenever possible. Therefore, we ask that all students follow rules of our playground and keep their jackets/coats on as well as wear them outside. Thank you for your help with this matter. As a reminder, please also be sure to review a few of our rules (keeping hands, feet, and objects to ourselves), especially in the lunchroom and recess as well as on 2nd recess with staff. Thank you for your support!
DECEMBER TO REMEMBER for STAFF and STUDENTS:
THANK YOU TO YOU ALL FOR DONATING!!! Winners of our gift cards included: Mrs. Oltersdorf, Mrs. Brusseau, Mr. Mason, Ms. Morford, Mr. Doss and many more! Other teachers and teams earned pencils, flare pens, indoor recess games, and pencils! We appreciated your support!
WINTER WEATHER CLOTHING:
Just a reminder that students need to be dressed appropriately for the weather. Our plan and intent is to be outside as much as possible in approved weather conditions. If your family needs additional supplies of hats, coats, or gloves, please contact the office and we can certainly help provide materials to use. Thank you! We are happy to help!
LOST AND FOUND
We have a ton of lost and found items. Please take a minute after school to stop in and collect your children's items. Lots of hats, gloves, and jackets are in the bin by the Breakfast Door. DONATING TO COLLINS CLOSET ON FRIDAY, 12/22/23.
VISITORS' POLICIES
Prior to entering the building for any reason, all visitors that are coming to the school to pick up their child and/or volunteer must show their driver's license to the camera prior to entering our school. This is a district policy that we must begin enforcing. Please be sure to buzz the front door and hold up your license prior to being allowed into the building. As this is a safety issue for all, we appreciate your understanding! Thank you for your support!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful and restful holiday break.
We will see you back on January 3rd, in the new year!
Warm regards,
Principal Ciacchella

All Collins Cubs are expected to follow protocols and procedures while showing their PAWS! That includes inside the classrooms, during the hallways, on the playgrounds, and for arrivial/dismissal as well. Teachers will be on the lookout for ways to celebrate students showing their PAWS and have a chance to earn incentives.
UTICA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PARENT HANDBOOK FOR BEHAVIORS
Please review all Utica Community Schools behavior policies in the Parent Handbook attached to the link below. It is expected that all UCS policies and procedures will be adhered to at any/all school functions and on school properties. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
SCHOOL SAFETY UPDATE
Safety remains a priority for our school. Collins Elementary is once again providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.)
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
