Guided Reading Instruction at LES
Just a reminder that as we head into Term 2, your child may mention having a new guided reading teacher. This year our literacy team is utilizing strong collaboration to more effectively support and grow your reader! We are using flexible grouping structures, across classrooms and sometimes even grade levels, for small group reading support based on academic growth. We are following this model so that every child is challenged and continues to grow.

Counselor News from Mrs. Bokinsky
It’s that time of year again! Our annual “Giving Tree” is up and ready here at LES. Each paper ornament on the tree will list an item of need for a LES Family. There are situations which can cause extreme pressure and place burdens on a family financially. If you would like to be a part of this incredible program, just follow the steps below:
How it Works!
Remove an ornament tag from the tree (with parent permission)
Purchase the item(s)
Return the wrapped item(s) to Mrs. Bokinsky with the ornament tag attached
All items need to be to Mrs. Bokinsky by Dec. 13, 2019
Thank you so much for supporting our “Giving Tree.” If you have any questions, please contact me, Stacy Bokinsky, at stacy.bokinsky@fcps.org or 240-236-3755.
Pennies for Patients will be wrapping up this Friday, November 22, 2019. So far we have raised over $600 and I haven’t even finished counting up donations! Our goal this year is $750. Thank you so much to all of the families that have helped with this worthy cause!
Congratulations to our “Kind Kids” of October. Staff nominated the following students for showing kindness around LES: Tyler W., Dakota M., Mady F., Jayden P., Emma L., Kerington W., Lily C., JD P., Katherine M., Marques S., Zion S., and Ade S. Great job showing kindness!
Speaking of kindness. Did you know that our Peer Mentors are also our Kindness Club? So far we have done projects with Kindergarten and 5th grade. Kindergarten made turkeys to hang at Homewood Nursing Home and 5th grade helped with Socktober. Next, we plan to work with 4th grade to make holiday cards for the military. If you ever have any ideas for kindness projects, please let us know. We would like to do a project with every class!
Feeder Attendance Challenge
The Catoctin Feeder Principals are committed to student attendance. We believe that every minute missed is a learning opportunity lost. We encourage students to be at school, ready to learn and on time each and every day. We appreciate the efforts of our families in establishing positive attendance habits.
Each month we will engage in a Feeder Attendance Challenge. A random date will be selected for attendance rates to be compared across the feeder. Schools, as well as grade levels, will compete against one another for the highest attendance percentage. The school, and grade levels, with the highest attendance rates will earn a special reward.
