St. Luke Update: March 13, 2020
COVID-19/School E-Learning Update, 3/13/2020
E-Learning Updates
We appreciate your patience and support as we navigate the unknown waters of an extended period of e-Learning. Our teachers have been here all day working diligently to prepare materials and lesson plans for your children. I would like to highlight a few key items below.
Please Collect Your Child's Materials on Monday, March 16
The school will be open to parents from 7:30am until 6:00pm.
A list of what materials are needed will be posted in your child's classroom and/or on your child's desk. This may include textbooks, workbooks, or printed materials.
If you are unable to attend, please ask a friend to gather your child's materials for you. The children will need these materials beginning Tuesday, March 17.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (Mrs. Prater & Ms. Horcher):
- If your child is in instrumental music, please stop by the music room to collect their instrument. Mrs. Prater will be here to assist.
LOST & FOUND (Ms. Schmitz):
- This would be a GREAT time to stop by the school's Lost & Found and see if any of your child's belongings are here!
MEDICATIONS (Nurse Gillig):
- Any medications that your child may have in the nurse's office can be collected from Nurse Toni during this time. (Please note you are not required to take them, but are invited to do so if you need these medications at home during the extended e-learning period.)
LIBRARY BOOKS (Mrs. Burns):
- Mrs. Burns will be here on Monday to allow families to check out books for your children to read. Please stop by the library when you're here if you are interested! The library will be open from 9-11am, 1pm-3pm, 5-6pm.
IPADS (Mrs. Borland)
- To help ensure that families have access to enough devices to support their child's e-learning needs, St. Luke will be able to allow each family to borrow 1 additional iPad per family. If you would like to take advantage of this, please see Mrs. Borland in the Primary Resource hallway (at the top of the south stairwell.)
Teacher Office Hours
Communication received during this window will be responded to promptly. Communication received outside of this window will receive a response from teachers within 24 hours or 1 business day.
Note: Teachers will be available intermittently on Monday, but may not be entirely accessible through digital communication in the allocated office hour time frame as many will be here helping distribute educational materials to parents.
If your child has an ISP, you may reach out directly to your child's Resource Teacher if your child has questions or needs additional educational support with their e-Learning assignments.
Learning Format
As we will be engaging in distance learning for a period of at least two weeks, our teachers will be working to ensure that we are not only reviewing important standards that have been previously taught, but also continuing to teach new content. This will likely mean that the lessons are more substantial (lengthier and/or more involved) than the emergency e-Learning lessons we have used in the past.
The learning activities during this time may include assessments that need to be taken at home. If this is the case, your child's teacher will communicate the expectations for students in regards to timing, test integrity, etc.
Some content may need to be submitted electronically while others may be collected and returned in person when we return to school. Please see your individual child's e-Learning plans for guidance on this. (This information will be forthcoming from teachers.)
Teachers will likely continue to use technology tools that the children are familiar with such as Moby Max and ALEKS. Some teachers may begin incorporating additional tools to enhance the distance learning experience, as well.
Certainly, we can all stand in agreement that e-learning is not a perfect substitute for our children receiving instruction from their teachers in person. We also understand that there are concerns about students being asked to spend additional time on devices while participating in e-Learning. Our teachers are striving to incorporate a variety of lessons which will include some non-technology based lessons, as well, to help balance these concerns. Our teachers will continue to do their best to provide the most meaningful use of our educational time together during this extended period of e-Learning. Thank you for your support, understanding and partnership in learning!

- Students need to complete the assignments provided by the teachers

- Parents need to EITHER print and sign the E-Learning Verification Sheet being sent home by your child's teacher OR digitally confirm your child's attendance using the following links:
FAQ's
- A: We are so proud of the hard work that all of our young actors and actresses have put into preparing for Seussical! It is our hope that we will be able to reschedule the musical this spring. We will be continuing to monitor the situation and will remain in contact with Chelsea Anderson Productions to determine our options once we have a more clear idea of when traditional school will resume.
Q: Will the Passion Play occur?
- A: The 8th grade Passion Play is a vital tradition in our Easter celebration. We will work with Msgr. Schaedel, the parish, Tony Avalono, and Shelia Gramling to coordinate when our 8th graders will perform the Passion.
Q: When will students get their instruments and items from the classroom?
- A: Families MUST come to St. Luke School on Monday, March 16 from 7:30 am - 6:00 pm to pick up textbooks, personal items from the classroom, and instruments. The school library will also be open from 9:00am-11:00am, 1:00pm-3:00pm and 5:00pm-6:00pm if students would like to check out additional library books.
Q: Will St. Luke extend the school year?
- A: St. Luke Catholic School will continue to follow the requirements and guidance from the Indiana Department of Education. Friday, March 13 we are using a waiver from the state and will not need to make the school day up. March 16 - March 26 we are using E-Learning days and thus will not need to make up these days. We will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate any changes.
