Reading
During February we will continue to work with reading literature selections and informational text. We will continue to focus on determining the main idea and supporting details of a text. We will use information presented in diverse media and formats for our lessons. In our literary selections we will describe character traits and feelings in the stories we read. Thank you for encouraging your child to practice reading at home daily during the week. This really will help your child with building fluency.
Writing
During February we are starting work on our opinion writing unit. The children will be looking at their world and imagining how it could be better in order to grow ideas for possible writing projects. We will be writing speeches that express brave and bold opinions. Students will learn to elaborate, edit, self-assess, and eventually choose one “seed opinion” from their writing notebook they have been working on to develop into a writing project.
Math
This month we will continue to understand the relationship between multiplication and division and work on building fact fluency. The children should work through their knowledge of fact families and will study the inverse operation and how it can help them solve problems in multiplication and division. We are working on building fact fluency to multiply and divide within 100. Please practice these facts with your child daily.
Some third grade teachers will continue to work on building students’ understanding of fractions as well.

Need to Know
Our Valentine’s Party is on Wednesday , Feb. 13 from 2:40 to 3:20 pm. Room parents have been working to plan parties for each class. Your child can bring Valentine cards to share but be certain to have one for each child in the class. If you are planning on helping at the party, remember that siblings are not allowed. Also, your child should go home at the end of the day following normal procedures.
