Phonics
Heggerty focuses on building phonemic awareness skills. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that words are made up of individual sounds. Heggerty is an interactive way of teaching these skills that build reading readiness skills.
Fundations is the systematic, explicit teaching of phonics skills with an emphasis on spelling patterns, not memorization of words. Students will learn to tap out words using the sounds they are taught in fundations.
Students will learn trick words, which are also referred to as "heart words" in fundations. Heart words mean that part of the word is decodable, but there may be one or two parts of the word that sounds irregular.
