Costa's Levels of Thinking:
Last week, we shared information about Costa's Levels of Thinking. We continue our work with Costa and share some more examples, specific to subject areas.
In Literature:
Level 1: In the fairy tale "The Three Little Pigs," of what materials were the pigs' houses constructed?
Level 2: Compare and contrast the houses of the three little pigs.
Level 3: If all the pigs' houses had been made of brick, how might the story have been different?
In Physical Education:
Level 1: Name the three basic skills of volleyball.
Level 2: Group the volleyball players on the court based on their role.
Level 3: Judge whether volleyball is a tougher sport than tennis.
In Science:
Level 1: List all of the planets in our solar system.
Level 2: Arrange the planets in our solar system in order of size, from largest to smallest.
Level 3: Do you believe that life could exist on planets in other solar systems? Explain your thinking.
In Math:
Level 1: Evaluate (3 x 2) + 6.
Level 2: Show your work for the following problem and determine which property was used for each step: (3 x 2) + 6 = (6 x 2) x 1.
Level 3: Explain what properties you used to solve (3 x 2) + 6 = (6 x 2) x 1 and why you chose to use each property.
At Home (from last week): Be sure to use level 2 and 3 questions in your discussions, especially non-academic discussions. "Why do you think the grocery store has aisles organized in this way?" "What would our home look like without interior walls?" "Do you think the dog understands our facial expressions? Why or why not?" "With more research about CTE from repeated head injuries, should tackle football be banned? Does the age of the player make a difference?" "Was ____ the right choice?"
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
Second Step is the resource we use to teach social emotional skills in all our classes. Our fourth unit's theme is "Problem Solving." Problem Solving focuses on naming the problem, identifying and evaluating possible solutions, choosing the best option.
Over the next few weeks, your child should learn how to:
Kindergarten: demonstrate offering to share or take turns as a problem-solving strategy in a given scenario.
1st Grade: suggest one way to solve a problem in a given scenario.
2nd Grade: generate possible solutions and select the solution that makes sense in a given problem.
3rd Grade: solve a given problem using the STEP process.
4th Grade: apply the STEP process and consider the points of view of everyone involved.
5th Grade: apply the STEP process and consider the context in which they might best solve the problem
