Square 1 Art Fundraiser Update
Thank you to our families who placed an order to benefit our art department. Orders will arrive and be distributed to students to bring home in the middle of December. If you notified Mrs. Shields-Roberson to hold onto your child's items as a surprise, she will contact you to make pick up arrangements.
If you forgot to place an order and would like to do so, you still can by using your child's access code and do so online. Any orders placed through Square 1 Art during the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year will still benefit the art department, however, orders would arrive at your residence and incur shipping costs. Please contact Mrs. Shields-Roberson for your child's access code or codes from the last five years your child has been enrolled at Yellow Springs.
Again, thank you for supporting the arts at YSES and in Frederick County!
Mrs. Shields-Roberson

Mitten Tree - December 2017
Beginning Friday December 1st Yellow Springs will have a Mitten Tree in the front Hallway. Please take a mitten, fill it with a gift card from Wal-Mart, Giant, Weis, K-mart, a gas card or any other store that is easy to access in our area. Please note the value on the card to help with a fair distribution.
We have many families that can benefit from your generosity. Please help us make everyone’s Holiday special this year! All Mittens should be returned to Mrs. Johansen no later than Wednesday December 13th so we can get them out to families before the Holidays. If you have any questions, concerns or needs please call Mrs. Johansen at (240) 236-1607. Thank-you for your help!
Bottle Cap Donations
The art department is asking for donations of bottle caps to help us create a mural at Yellow Springs. Bottle caps in a variety of sizes and colors are being used. You can send in your donations with your child to give to Mrs. Shields-Roberson. You can also drop them off in the front office. We will be accepting donations from now until winter 2018. We are hoping to create our mural this spring. Thank you for your help in this endeavor and for supporting the arts!

From the Health Room
Here are a few reminders from Michelle Romani, School Nurse:
Your child should stay home from school if he/she has one or more of the following symptoms:
- Temperature of more than 100
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Undiagnosed rash or skin infection
Please keep your child home from school for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting, fever, and/or diarrhea. If these symptoms persist form more than 24 hours, you should contact your child's health care provider.
To help ensure a healthy experience at school and help prevent illness:
- Notify the Health Room Staff when your child has an infectious disease such as strep throat, pneumonia, flu, conjunctivitis, rash, etc.
- Make sure your child washes their hands at appropriate times (i.e. before meals, after restroom use, after playing, after sneezing/coughing in their hands, when visibly dirty, etc.) to cut down on the spreading of germs.
Please call the health room with any questions concerning your child's health at 240.236.1667
Thank You to our PTA
We would like to extend our gratitude and a huge thanks to our wonderful PTA. The delicious chili lunch was a huge hit. Also, all the food provided during our parent/teacher conferences was greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to send in food. We truly enjoyed all of it!
When it snows...
Dear FCPS Community:
As snowy weather approaches, this is an important reminder about FCPS emergency communication. We recommend that you SAVE THIS MESSAGE for future reference.
See our award-winning Weather Delays and Closings video and more:
http://www.fcps.org/weather.
See How FCPS Decides Whether to Close or Delay Schools:
https://fcps.ezcommunicator.net/edu/Frederick/GetFile.aspx?DocId=5582
After making the decision to close for snow or other emergencies, FCPS uses MANY ways to communicate! Here are places to check:
- www.fcps.org We post alerts to appear at the very top of each webpage, with details in the home page News and Info section. You can access the FCPS website from many devices.
- Comcast cable channel 18 on TV or online http://www.fcps.org/centraloffice/fcps-television
- FCPS Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FCPSMaryland
- FCPS Twitter https://twitter.com/fcpsmaryland
- FCPS FindOutFirst (FOF) www.fcps.org/fof or
http://fcps.ezcommunicator.net/edu/frederick/login_form.aspx?app=0
WITHOUT logging in, you may view published notices using the Archive icon on the upper black bar to the left of the Select Language option. From either of the above FOF links, SIGN UP for FindOutFirst EMAIL notices and TEXT messages. Delivery speed depends on your Internet Service Provider (for email) and your phone-service provider (for text messages), message length and other factors. FOF text messages are typically faster than email, which is slower but has room for details. Most subscribers sign up for both.
- We notify about 30 local and regional radio and TV stations but cannot guarantee the accuracy of their messages. There is a Frederick County Public Schools system in Virginia; make sure you're hearing information about FCPS Maryland!
Afterschool and Weekend Activities: Generally, when schools are closed due to inclement weather, school-sponsored afterschool and evening activities are canceled or postponed. On non-school days when the Snow Emergency Plan is in effect in Frederick County, unless the Superintendent grants a waiver, all afterschool, evening and weekend programs and activities are canceled or postponed, including events scheduled by outside user groups. Exceptions: Frederick County Parks and Recreation programs operating in community gyms in FCPS schools and daycare programs operating in FCPS schools (such as YMCA before- and afterschool programs) independently make and communicate their decisions regarding schedule modifications. For Frederick County Parks and Recreation program updates, you may call 301-600-6291.
Snow Emergency Plan status is announced on local radio and posted on the Maryland Department of Transportation website:

Parents are advised to review your FCPS Calendar Handbook, page 5, especially for information about pre-k and Career and Technology Center delays.
