Is the adage "Monkey See, Monkey Do" true?
In this part of Module Six, you will study observational learning, and see that a large part of learning does indeed come from observing others. Psychologist Albert Bandura studied many aspects of observational learning and determined that observational learning requires the following conditions to be successful:
- 1. Observational learning requires attention.
- 2. Retention is key. We need to note and remember what we see.
- 3. Motor reproduction - Observational learning cannot occur if we lack the motor skills necessary to perform the action being observed
- 4. Reinforcement - We also decide whether we want to repeat the modeled behavior based on whether or not the model was reinforced.
View the PhotoPeach video below. How many examples of observational learning can you find?
Albert Bandura
· Albert Bandura demonstrated observational learning in preschoolers.
· Children who had observed an adult taking out frustration on an inflatable Bobo doll would later act out the same aggression (even using the same words in some cases)
· Bandura believed that reinforcements and punishments played a part in determining whether or not certain behaviors were imitated
