Lewport IEC
From the principal
Dear IEC Families,
The end of the year is quickly approaching. With only eight weeks of school left, it will be two very busy months at the IEC. This is the time of year that we start planning for next year. We are now into our sixth year of the District Strategic Plan, which is the framework of our educational goals for the next couple years. As part of the end of the year planning, we will be working collaboratively with the staff to work on student promotions and placements. We believe this is a collaborative process and we value input from all stakeholders.
The process is very complex and takes many factors into consideration. We consider class size, academic needs, social-emotional needs, and structure of the program. We look at each student individually. Although we do not take parent requests for specific teachers, if you would like to request a program or need to inform me of any specific needs of your child, please fill out the form, Program Request Form.
If you would like to schedule a meeting to discuss the specific needs of your child or to receive an explanation of the programs offered next year, please contact Karen Ruero in the main office 716-286-7252. This is a great opportunity for you to let me know if your child requires a specific learning environment to be successful in the classroom. The deadline for scheduling an appointment is June 11, 2021.
Please be aware that this is not a time to request a specific teacher; we focus on your child’s needs and programs. Throughout every child’s school career, he or she will come into contact with many different teaching styles and personalities. In today’s society, our students will be required to be flexible, and will need to develop skills to be able to work with a variety of people.
You will be notified of your child’s class placement for the 2021-22 school year at the end of August.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rodriguez

Coding kids!
The IEC Coding Kiddo’s presented their achievements at April’s Board of Education meeting. The team: Mason Smith, William Pawlak, Liam Suitor, Anisha Singh, and James Donnelley – Coaches: Miss. Bradshaw and Miss. Koroschetz. The Wonder League Robotics Competition (WLRC) started in 2015 and has now reached more than 86,500 kids over the last five years. The growing network of coding and robotics teams uses an all-inclusive program to inspire an early love of coding, computer science, tangible learning, and STEAM education. Through a series of story-based missions, the teams develop problem-solving, growth mindset, and creativity skills while learning to code. The students must conduct a series of five missions and summit it to the board of WLRC in order to continue on to the final round. Excitingly, these students were able to successfully make it to the invitational round. During this round the students had to create original attachments for the robot, design a floor plan, and come up with a real-life problem in our community with a way to solve this problem. The students chose to investigate the water-levels of Lake Ontario and design a plan to avoid the land erosion. We are very proud of these students and their ability to use critical thinking and problem solve.

It's Seasonal Allergy time! Many of the symptoms of allergies, common cold and asthma are the same as COVID-19. Unfortunately, it is hard to determine which ailment is the cause AND your child could have COVID-19 in addition to the Asthma or Seasonal allergies that they are prone to.
The school is still required to have either medical clearance or a negative COVID-19 test to return to school for any potential COVID-19 symptoms.
PLEASE consult their Primary Care Physician for advice regarding documentation or testing.
If you have any questions, please call the School Nurse Mrs. Klettke 286-7284
Physical Exams, Dental Exams, Immunizations & Medications in School
Third and Fifth Grade Students in September 2021
Students entering 3rd and 5th grade in the fall of 2021 are required to submit a physical examination report by September 7, 2021.
The physicals can be dated September 7, 2020 and after per New York State Law (one year before the start of the new school year). You can send in a copy of the physical now already if completed and it will be filed in your child’s chart. Physicals can also be faxed to the school by your child’s Primary Care Provider to 286-7854.
A completed dental health certificate is also requested.
Forms can be downloaded from www.lew-port.com, Departments, Health Services, Forms
Please keep a copy of any health forms for your own records before submitting them to the IEC.
6th Grade Students in September 2021
All 6th grade students are required to receive a Tdap booster immunization at the age of 11. This means that if your child is age 11 before the first day of school, they must have received this immunization and provided proof to the school. Students who turn age 11 after the first day of school must receive the vaccine within two weeks after their birthday. Meningitis immunization is required for all 7th grade students. You may have the option of doing both vaccines at the same visit. Your doctor’s office can help you with making sure your child has fulfilled all requirements. Proof of all immunizations must be provided to the school by hand delivering, mailing in or faxing immunization records. Since a physical exam is generally given prior to the child getting these immunizations, a copy of the exam along with the immunization records is kindly requested.
Students who are not current with their immunization compliance on September 7rd, 2021, can be excluded from school attendance per NYS law.
Medication in School
All medication in school for next year requires a new order from a child’s health care provider for the 2019-2020 school year and a parent signature. Medication (including over the counter meds) are not allowed to be given to a child in school without an order from a Health Care Provider per New York State Law. An adult needs to bring the medication into school.
If your child has medication in school, it will need to be picked up by an adult during the last week of school in June 2019. Medication is not allowed to come to school or to go home in a child’s backpack. If not picked up at the end of June, the medication will be discarded.
Clothing Donation
The IEC health office accepts clothing donations of elastic waist pants, leggings, shorts and t-shirts.
Only children’s sizes for ages 8 to 11 are needed. Thank you in advance for any donation.

Discovering our passions!
Students in Miss. Bradshaw's enrichment room have been doing just that by working on Discovering their Passions! Students are exploring passions through higher-level questioning, designing burning questions, and researching through methods of internet searches, professional interviews, and hands-on discoveries.
Passion projects integrate reading comprehension skills, note-taking skills, and writing skills. More than just learning research skills, Passion Projects promote creativity and innovative thinking. Students are developing self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision making!
A note from the school nurse
Dear 5th grade parents,
In less than six months, your son or daughter will be preparing to enter in to the Middle School. I wanted to let you know early what you can do to help assure a smooth transition with regard to the health requirements of New York State.
All 6th grade students are required to receive a Tdap booster immunization at the age of 11. This means that if your child is age 11 before the first day of school, they must have received this immunization and provided proof to the school. Students who turn age 11 after the first day of school must receive the vaccine within two weeks after their birthday. Recent legislation has passed requiring the meningitis immunization for all 7th grade students. You may have the option of doing both vaccines at the same visit. Your doctors’ office can help you with making sure your child has fulfilled all requirements.
Proof of all immunizations must be provided to the school by hand delivering, mailing in or faxing immunization records.
Since a physical exam is generally given prior to the child getting these immunizations, a copy of the exam along with the immunization records is kindly requested.
Up through the end of June of 2021, these forms may be submitted to the IEC nurse, Gloria Klettke, to record in your child’s health chart.
The policy regarding medication in school remains the same. A doctor’s written order and parent signature is required. A container labeled with your child’s name from the pharmacy is required. An over the counter product ordered by a doctor must have your child’s name written on the packaging in marker.
I thought it might be helpful for you to have as much advance notice as possible. It is my goal to make a healthy and safe environment for your child to learn and grow here at Lew-Port Middle School.
