Oh Captains, Our Captains!
We wanted to send a special shout out to the captains of our OCE ship, Dr. Steidinger and Ms. May. If you have a second, be sure to send them a message of thanks or give them a high five in the hall! They do so much every day to ensure our Clippers are provided the opportunities they need to achieve their fullest potential.
Thank you, Dr. Steidinger and Ms. May! You're simply the BEST!

Thing 1 and Thing 2
From WCPSS: NO SCHOOL MAY 1
Parents,
Many of you are aware that thousands of educators from throughout North Carolina are planning to gather in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 1. They are attending a rally at the General Assembly to improve classroom opportunities for our children and to improve working conditions for teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and others who support our schools.
At this time, nearly 2,000 Wake County teachers have requested time away from the classroom to participate in this rally. More requests are expected in the coming days. The number of requests far exceeds our number of available substitute teachers, which means we cannot ensure adequate instruction and supervision that day.
As a result, all schools will be closed for normal operations on Wednesday, May 1. It will become an optional teacher workday. No make-up day for students will be required due to the number of instructional hours already accumulated this year. We’ll provide additional information shortly regarding conflicts with individual school events.
This decision is not made lightly. We know that this schedule change puts a burden on families. We also know that our teachers are not taking the day off. Instead, they are taking leave from the classroom to advocate for public education, for their students and for your children. I ask that you give them your support.
More information and updates can be found on our website. Additional information will be sent to staff.
Sincerely,
Jim Martin
Chair, Wake County Board of Education

PTA Positions
The PTA has several open positions for the 2019-2020 school year. Volunteering with the PTA is an excellent way to be involved with and make positive change for our students and staff here at OCE.
- Treasurer: The Treasurer is responsible for the annual budget, monthly reports, deposits, and check requests. This position requires frequent visits to school. Our volunteer this year is super organized and ready to train her successor so it should make for a smooth transition. If you are good with numbers, this is your time to shine.
- Silent Auction: We are in need of a person (or team of people) to plan and market the event as well as secure auction items. We already have a parent in place that will be running the online bidding system.
If you have any questions about these open positions, please email oce.pta@gmail.com for more details.
The Carnival is Coming!
The OCE Spring Carnival will take place on Friday, May 10th. We are in need of parent volunteer help in the following areas:
- Prizes
- Coordinating and Checking-In Volunteers
- Set up/clean up
- Ticket sales (pre-order bags & bundle of tickets for day of purchase)
If you are able to help, please email Kelly and Christine (kellymac826@gmail.com, christinerooney1030@gmail.com).

WCPSS Presents Letterland at Pullen Park
Raleigh’s Pullen Park will be transformed into Letterland on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. to celebrate preschool and elementary school students in Wake County.
Letterland brings letters to life by turning them into colorful characters, each with their own personality and stories that go along with their sounds. Wake County elementary schools in grades Pre-K-2 and many preschool programs use the phonics program as part of their literacy instruction.
