A Message from the Principal
Greetings,
Wow! Check out the calendar for next week. There are so many fun events planned and I look forward to seeing everyone. As I think ahead to welcoming some of our new Kindergarten students Thursday night, I am also excited to see who will be returning to Maple next school year. On April 29th, you will receive an “Intent to Return” form via e-mail. PLEASE be sure to complete this so I can begin preparing for next school year. This is important because we start looking at class size and class lists before we leave for summer.
Next week, we begin ILEARN testing with for 3rd Grade. ILEARN took the place of what was previously called ISTEP. I need EVERY student at school on time every day next week. We will begin testing at 8:30. Testing will take 1-2 hours a day. It will be extremely difficult to make-up tests for students who are absent, so thanks in advance for helping us!
Did you know students are required to be 13 years old to have an Instagram, Snap Chat or TikTok account on social media? This is for a good reason. Students in elementary school may lack the maturity and knowledge needed to use these platforms safely. I encourage all of you to check phones and to hold off on access as long as you’re able. I’ve been surprised at how many times social media has crept into conversations/teachable moments for Mrs. Samide and me this year. I also want to encourage you to read the book, Disconnected by Thomas Kersting. I have boys age 15 and 18 and if I had read this book before getting them phones, there are a LOT of things I would have done differently. Here is a link to a recent story (9 minutes) from CNBC about the concern as well: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/21/what-age-is-appropriate-to-sign-up-for-social-media.html
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki Harrison

Maple Students are Career Ready!!
Today, during Fab Friday, we had a career fair during FAB Friday. Our students interacted with adults from many occupations and learned how to get started on their own career path. Take time this weekend to talk to your child about what they learned today.
Our second Screen-Free week of the year will be April 21-27. It’s time to turn off the TV, put away those video games and air up the tires on your bike! You can channel your inner foodie or dig out those Legos and become a master builder! The week will culminate in a family game night on Friday the 26th at 5:30. Students who meet this challenge can win prizes by turning in a note from their parents. I look forward to hearing about your screen-free adventures!
Finally, there is a new Spark video on personal safety on my webpage. I am discussing safety, including safe/unsafe touch with all the students this month. Click here or visit my webpage to see the video.
