From the Principal
Thank you to all of you who came out for our movie night on Friday and for those of you who came to read to our scholars on Read Across America day. We love having our families and community members at school! Check out the pictures of both events below.
In light of recent developments with the Coronavirus I wanted to let families know that the school is following all recommendations set forth from the CDC. We are encouraging frequent and thorough hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes with the elbow, and if your child is symptomatic and/or has a fever please keep them home from school for at least 24 hours. In addition, our light switches, door handles and desks/tables are disinfected nightly. Below are a couple of videos we will share in our classrooms regarding hand washing and covering coughs and sneezes.

Annual enrollment will be opening soon. Be on the lookout for an email from the school later this week with more information and directions.
Finally, I want to wish all of you a safe and relaxing spring break!
As always it is an honor to serve as the principal of Sunflower Elementary.

From The Counselor
Positive Action Lessons (social curriculum) for the month of March!
Classroom teachers and the counselor will be teaching Unit 5: Telling Yourself the Truth Using Emotional Positive Actions. The area of self-honesty is perhaps the most critical aspect of the Positive Action philosophy. The other positive behaviors are only possible when people learn to be honest with themselves. This means that individuals must learn to deal with reality and to see themselves as they really are.
Self-honesty is difficult. It takes perception that comes only through practice. During this unit, scholars will practice telling themselves the truth, knowing themselves, not blaming others, admitting mistakes, not making excuses, and keeping their word
Main topics that our scholars will be focusing on include...
a) Self-Honesty: to tell yourself the truth.
b) Truth: something you can count on.
c) Integrity: to do what you say you will do.
d) Self-Responsibility: to answer for your actions.
e) Trust: to have confidence or faith.
f) Forgiveness: to give up anger and resentment.
Please contact Julie Heatwole (school counselor) if you have any questions or concerns at #785-330-4860 or jheatwol@usd497.org

$1 PJ Day is Back!
Based on the HUGE success of our first $1 PJ Day in December which raised close to $600 for Sunflower - we are going to do it again this Friday, March 6th as a fun send-off into Spring Break. The classroom with the highest $1 donation participation will be rewarded with a surprise popcorn and movie party at a later date.
We want to stress that this is a SUGGESTED donation and does not mean kids cannot participate if they do not have $1 to donate. If you can bring $1 for Sunflower, fantastic and if you can’t kids are still more than welcome to participate.
Let’s have fun rolling into Spring Break with our favorite PJ’s!
Marathon Club
Its almost time for Marathon club to kick-off again after winter break. Club will start Wednesday March, 18th right after school and we are looking for more Volunteers to help us keep club running & safe for all.
