St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 1 | 5 FEBRUARY 2021

Message from Geordie
Welcome back to our St Bernie’s families – Take 2!
So needless to say, this is NOT how I envisaged the start to my time here at St Bernie’s, however, we are looking like we will be making a start on Monday which I am really looking forward to. As you can see from the photo above, Fred (sporting his new Eagles lead – thanks Mrs Crawford) is also very frustrated that he has not had any kids to play with this week!
I know that the last week will have been tough for some of our families and that for those juggling work and family life during lockdown, it is a full on and at times a mentally draining task! I for one learnt how difficult it is to concentrate, send emails and participate in online meetings with two 5-year-old’s insisting that they do every activity offered to them on my lap!
With the announcement from the Premier last night that some of the restrictions will be lifted from 6pm tonight, there is light at the end of the tunnel and our staff CAN’T WAIT to welcome your children back to school next week!
Looking on the bright side, the extra week has allowed us to get our school looking its best for the start of school. Our outside spaces are looking beautiful, clean and I can’t wait to get the footy or basketballs out on Monday! This has been no small feat as we were unfortunate to be subjected to a large amount of vandalism over the holidays. Many windows were smashed, graffiti plastered over the school and numerous shade sails ripped. We have been working with the council and police to identify the group that has targeted our school and we currently have a guard patrolling each night. We now have all our windows and graffiti fixed and our sails are now ordered, and we will look to get them back up as soon as we can.
If you are ever in the area and see something suspicious, please let us or the police know as it is a very frustrating situation!
Obviously with some of the restrictions being in place until next Sunday 14th February, we will need to be mindful next week. Please see the instructions below about school restrictions in place until next Friday the 12th February. Hopefully things will not change between now and then, but if they do I will be in touch!
Have an awesome weekend, enjoy the extra freedom and we will get stuck into it on Monday.
GO THE SCORCHERS TOMORROW NIGHT!

School starts on Monday 8th February with some restrictions in place
COVID Restrictions for next week
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to accommodate parents in classrooms next week. Parents who come into the school must wear a mask and as there is 150 adult limit on gatherings, we ask parents to only come into the school where necessary. As before, we remind you to observe the 1.5m social distancing rule where possible.
Next week, we invite one parent of 3YO Kindy to Year 1, as well as all new families to come onto the grounds in the mornings to drop students off at the door of the classroom if they wish. They may also come onto the grounds to pick up their children. We understand that for some younger children this can be daunting, especially when adults are wearing masks, so please talk to your children about this prior to coming to school.
New families to St Bernie’s – please come to the Admin Building and meet Katherine and Tracey. We will make sure your children are welcomed and get to their classes.
Kindy and Pre-Primary Parents – could you please wait outside the door; read the notice boards and follow teacher’s direction.
Year 1 Parents - could you please wait outside the classroom’s rear external doors and wait for the teacher’s instructions, please do not enter the corridors/wet areas.
Year 2 to 6 Parents – could you please ensure all stationery is in a box/bag with your child’s name clearly marked. Students are to wait outside the classroom’s external doors for teacher’s instructions, please do not enter the corridors/wet areas. Trolleys will be available at the drop off for those children who cannot manage to carry both bag and stationery items. Staff will also be stationed at classrooms to assist students with their stationery and bags. If you are parking in the Parish Carpark you may walk your child to the crosswalk. Students will then proceed into the school grounds.
Where possible it would be great if parents use the drive-through to drop off their children. If students can walk or ride, that will also help alleviate congestion!
In the afternoon, we ask parents to use the Drive-Through or wait on the grass opposite the front gate to collect their children. We will have plenty of staff available to help out in the morning and the afternoon.
If your child is feeling very anxious or there is another reason why you need to come into the school, no worries! Please let us know through the admin email so we can make the necessary arrangements – we are here to help and common sense should always prevail!
Parents bringing in medication and current Medical Management Plans – please come into the Admin Area to drop this off to Tracey or Katherine. A reminder that we can’t administer medication without the appropriate paperwork.
Please be advised that supervision commences at 8.15am and concludes at 3:25pm. It is strongly advised that you do not drop your children off before this time as there is no supervision and duty of care.
As staff have a variety of commitments after school, parents will be contacted if their children are not collected by 3:25pm. When children arrive at school they are to sit in the undercover area and either chat with their friends or read quietly. Students will not be allowed on their devices.
Other things to know for next week:
- All staff are required to wear a mask unless directly teaching students in class and this has been articulated to staff.
- Our students do not need to wear a mask. They are permitted to if you or they wish.
- All classes will be sending home Parent Information Notes on the first day, so we are all organised and parents know what is going on.
- Our school will be cleaned regularly in line with CEWA guidelines. Teachers will also be reiterating the importance of good hygiene with our students.
- All our playgrounds will be opened and cleaned daily.
- If your child requires on-site therapists to attend the school, this is allowed. Please get in touch through the admin email if this is the case and we can help to coordinate this.
- The school canteen will open as organised.
- At this stage we will not be able to have Parent Information Night as we had planned. We will look at organising an opportunity to meet and get to know the teachers once restrictions are lifted.
- If you do need to come into the school after drop-off or before pick-up, please sign in at the front office.
- St Bernadette’s Day was planned for next Friday. We still want to make this a special day for the students, and we will provide more information of a slightly different plan next week.
- At this stage swimming lessons and carnivals will proceed as planned.

Name cards in cars for Drive-Through
As the entire Leadership Team is new and will likely spend a fair bit of time in the Drive-Through, we are asking parents to put their family name on the dash of their car. We have been told many families may already have one, however, if you want us to make you a new one please email the office. Also, if you want to make your own then that is great too. Please just make sure the printing is large and easy to read!
