Attendance
The Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, as well as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, upholds a strict attendance policy. School policy requires that administrators review attendance regularly throughout the year and communicate with families regarding student absences. Administrators recognize the pandemic may contribute to student absences this year due to quarantine and illness and are understanding of these circumstances. The HWRSD attendance policy is listed below for your reference. Attendance letters are sent to families regularly throughout the year as needed.
HWRSD Attendance Policy:
If a student is absent eight (8) times during the first term, parents/guardians will be provided a written record of their child’s attendance.
Once a student is absent sixteen (16) times, the principal will review the students’ attendance record to determine compliance with the mandatory state attendance law. Parents will be notified in writing about their child’s attendance information. Action will be sought through the court when deemed appropriate by the principal.
After twenty-four (24) absences, a mandatory conference will be scheduled with the principal and parents. A warning notice will be sent documenting that any more absences may result in non-promotion to the next grade level. A court referral is probably at this point in time indicating failure to comply with the state mandated policy.
After twenty-eight (28) absences, the principal will review the attendance record and will send a letter to the parents/guardians notifying them of possible non-promotion of their child. A petition will be filed with the court indicating failure to comply with the state mandated policy.
Missing just 2 days per month or 18 days per school year (10%) is considered chronic absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism, whether excused for illness/medical reasons or family vacations add up to lost time in the classroom. Poor attendance can leave students struggling both academically and behaviorally. It often results in less meaningful connections with peers and adults at school which are an important building block for academic success.
