POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS (PBIS)
East Central Elementary School implements Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is supported by the Georgia Department of Education and Rome City Schools. It is a proactive approach for creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment in schools, and ensuring all students have the social/emotional skills needed
to be successful. Creating a positive culture in our school will help students achieve academically and build positive relationships with peers and adults.
The foundation of PBIS emphasizes teaching students expected behaviors, acknowledging them when they demonstrate expectations, and re-teaching them when needed. Our students have learned P.A.W.S., an acronym for: Positive attitude, Act responsibly, Work hard, Show respect.
In addition, the PBIS system has other components that your child has quickly become familiar with including the schoolwide behavior matrix, the classroom behavior matrix, and weekly expectation lessons presented each morning in the classroom. PBIS includes acknowledgement systems. Students are recognized through tangible items, praise/recognition, and social activities/events. Praise/recognition acknowledgements include Good Behavior Referrals and Wolf of the Month.
Social activities/events include nine week celebrations. In order to attend nine week celebrations, students must have no discipline referrals, one or less steps on the Progressive Discipline Plan, and all assignments must be properly complete and no “zeros” in the gradebook. The first nine weeks celebration is Wednesday, October 6th (Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade) and Thursday, October 7th (3rd-6th Grade & VLA students). Students who meet the requirements will take a trip to Ridge Ferry Park. There will be no cost for this field trip.
You may visit our school website at https://www.rcs.rome.ga.us/Domain/17, click on About Us and PBIS. We will continually update and add information that will be helpful for you as we work together to teach our students to display a positive attitude, act
responsibly, work hard, and show respect.
Second Step
During the month of August, our school wide theme is skills for learning: listening, focusing attention, using self-talk to stay on-task, and being assertive when asking for help with a learning task. In our morning announcements, we will be reminding students of these skills, which help students be successful learners.
Second Step lessons teach skills for learning. If you would like some of our Home Links describing why these skills are important and including fun activities to do with your child, please inform your child’s teacher. We will send them to you upon request. For more information, visit https://www.secondstep.org/.
