History of Sunni Islam

  • Both Sunni and Shi'a originated from the Prophet Muhammed
  • Became separate religions when Muhammed died
  • They separated because of disagreements of Muhammed's successor
  • Shi'a- Relative as a successor
  • Sunni- Someone capable of being a successor
  • The Sunni accepted Abu Bakr as the first Caliph (successor) which then separated the two religions
  • The Shi'a accepted Ali Ibn Abi Talib, who was the cousin and son-in-law of Muhammed
