Reopening 2020: Frequently Asked Questions

Based on the questions we received during our Virtual Community Forum on August 11, 2020, as well as feedback emails, we have created a new Frequently Asked Questions website to provide additional information related to reopening our schools for the 2020-21 school year. We will continue to update this list of questions as new information becomes available.

Instructional Model Feedback Surveys

Thank you to all who shared your feedback with our planning teams in the Fall 2020 Instructional Model Feedback surveys. Our teams have been closely reviewing your survey submissions and will be sharing themes from that feedback with our Board of Directors at a Work Session on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.

At the elementary school level, we received 288 survey responses (with 2.1% of feedback coming from students). Positive feedback highlighted the role of live teacher and peer interaction, the inclusion of hands-on learning strategies, the focus on social/emotional health, and consistency across the instructional models. Feedback also noted concerns about too much screen time for students, challenges with keeping students engaged in learning, necessary for parent support (including obstacles for working parents), and prior difficulties with the Seesaw learning platform.

At the middle school level, we received 160 survey responses (with 4.4% of feedback coming from students). Positive feedback highlighted appreciation for scheduled and live classes, flexibility between the instructional models, the simplicity of the two cohort approach, and the adjustment of the academic calendar to quarters. Feedback also noted concerns about students congregating during arrival and dismissal, a lack of electives, the need for students on IEPs, and the importance of building relationships.

At the high school level, we received 192 responses (with 20.3% of feedback coming from students). Positive feedback highlighted the inclusion of live or direct instruction, interactions with teachers and peers, the structured approach to the schedule and the "house" rotations, the use of A-F grading, and the inclusion of Comprehensive Distance Learning throughout the year. Feedback also noted concerns about safety and logistics, the importance of being at school with teachers/peers and in-person learning, and how to incorporate AP classes into student schedules.

Please stay tuned for additional opportunities to share your feedback in the weeks ahead!

Virtual Community Forums

On August 11, 2020, our district hosted our first-ever Virtual Community Forum. This event included individual sessions for elementary, middle school, and high school. Our district and school administrators shared information about the instructional models for the 2020-21 school year, and answered questions submitted by participants. We had over 1,200 participants watching the live stream of the forums, either via Zoom or YouTube!

Missed the forums? Our video replays are available on our YouTube channel found here. *Please note that the link for live Q&A is no longer accepting questions*

New 2020-21 Academic Calendar

On Wednesday, August 12, our Board of Directors approved a revised calendar for the 2020-21 school year. The most notable change to this calendar is the change from trimesters to quarters for this coming school year in grades 6-12 (grades K-5 will remain on the trimester schedule). Please click the image above to view a PDF version of the calendar.
