Engaging Our Community
Wednesday evening the District held an informational meeting regarding the upcoming referendum. Over 30 people attended, including PTA leaders, community leaders, school board members, staff, and community business and organizational members. I provided background and baseline information with regard to the District's current situation, current operational needs of the district, legislative assumptions, and the financial technicalities of the District's current operating levies, specifically the levy that expires if not renewed in November 2023.
The entire presentation was recorded and can be found on the District's website along with the slide presentation that was used. We will meet with the group again in May or June once we have survey results and a legislative update. I want to thank these community members for their time and attention.
Next week, the secondary administration will be presenting some final priorities and options from their program reviews, and on May 10th the school board will receive the results of the residential survey that is taking place at this time. If you receive a phone call from the survey company, we thank you for sharing your opinions.
2023 Operating Levy Website
We recently launched a “micro-website” that contains more information about our situation – you can find it here. Please watch this space for updates as our situation continues to evolve. There’s a good overview on the site called Hastings Public Schools Financial Situation – I encourage you to review it.

March Rotary Student of the Month
Congratulations, Alyssa Nestingen! On behalf of the Hastings Rotary Club and Hastings High School, congratulations on being selected as the March 2023 recipient of the Hastings Rotary "Student of the Month" Award. The Hastings Rotary Club recognizes Hastings High School seniors who exemplify Rotary's motto of 'Service Above Self' to reward and foster these ideals and build mutually rewarding relationships between school administration, staff, students, parents, and Rotary members.
Alyssa's nominators had this to say "Simply put, Alyssa loves to learn. She is a critical reader and a strong writer, but her greatest attribute as a student is her curiosity. If you ask her what she enjoys about the school, she'll say "asking questions and listening." They also shared "she is recognized by her peers as a role model and is seen as exemplary by the organizations she is involved in, including getting the Servant Leadership Award at Youth in Government this year - an award that is given to only 1 of the nearly 1500 delegates from around the state. Alyssa is a model of dedication, hard work, leadership, and character."
The Hastings Rotary Club recognized Alyssa and her parents at the Rotary Club meeting on Thursday, April 20th, 2023.
