This Sunday's Message: Thinking About...Anger
“Pilate asked them, ‘Why, what evil has he done?’
But they shouted all the more, ‘Crucify him!’”
(Mark 15:14)
This Sunday's Scriptures: Mark 15:6-15 Psalm 37:8-13 Matthew 21:1-17
From the desk of Pastor Paul...
Dear Friends,
Palm Sunday and Holy Week are upon us! We’ve travelled through the Season of Lent reflecting on the Seven Deadly Sins (we’ll only miss out on gluttony). They are stark reminders of our human nature as well as our need for Christ’s sin offering on our behalf. As we conclude our studies, we look at Anger this coming Sunday.
You won’t read “Be Prideful” or “Be Greedy” or “Be Slothful” anywhere in scripture, but you will read this verse in Ephesians 4:26 – “Be angry, but do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger.” Be Angry? An actual endorsement of one of the Seven Deadly Sins? That’s right. In addition, when you read all the Gospel accounts of Jesus entering Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, they all say he went to the Temple, threw the moneychangers out of the Temple, and rearranged the furniture pretty dramatically! Jesus was angry!
So this deadly sin, like all the others it seems, can be a catalyst to positive or negative outcomes depending on how we choose to respond to a natural human trait. Some folks in history have been motivated by anger to accomplish great things. Some folks in history have been motivated by anger to do incredibly destructive things. On Sunday, we will try to discern how we can handle this area of our human experience in a way that honors God and blesses others around us.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Paul
P.S. Part of the conclusion of our Lenten Journey will be the wonderful offering by our Chancel Choir at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday evening, “A Journey to Hope” as well as our Community Good Friday service at Orchard United Methodist on Good Friday at 12:15 p.m.
Maundy Thursday’s service will include communion as well as the powerful musical presentation of the significance of these days for us. Please plan to be a part of both of these times of worship as God’s people.

Where am I going?
“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:14
Are we almost there? Are we really going to Jerusalem? How much longer before we get there? Having a goal helps us to continue until we reach our destination. Your goal may be to walk 2 miles, 5 miles, or 50 miles this week. Your spiritual goal may be to read the scriptures each day, pray daily, or memorize a Bible verse. The deeper spiritual goal may be to have a stronger personal relationship with Jesus, approach others in a kinder loving manner or to forgive someone. The ultimate spiritual goal is to become more Christ-like in our everyday encounters with others. Questions to ponder as we walk:
- Do I have physical and spiritual goals for this week?
- Do I have physical and spiritual goals for my life?
- What is one thing I can do to achieve my physical goal?
- What is one thing I can do to achieve my spiritual goal?
